| Yorkie & Kittens So my guy & i just recently adopted two little homeless kittens. They're seven weeks old & we couldn't bear to separate them because they're so attached. Our 2.5 year old yorkie, Frankie, is super friendly with other animals and likes cats- cats just don't like him- so we knew it wouldn't be too difficult to integrate the girls into the house. (So we thought.) We played it slow, and after a few days, they were able to be in the same room with each other with the kittens being curious about Frankie, although very distrustful. He'd be laying in his bed, they'd go nose to nose with him to investigate but the moment he moved, the kitties would jump backwards or hiss. Eventually it got to where they were in the same room together, the kittens playing together, Frankie a few feet of way, just kind of ignoring each other but keeping an eye out. Frankie could be on one side of my lap and a kitten on the other and all would be well as long as I was the intermediary. Surprisingly enough, two days ago, a little over a week since bringing the kittens home, the more timid kitten, Tygra, surprised us by initiating play with Frankie. The two played for a few minutes, while Sashi, the more bold kitten, watched. However, play ended abruptly when Frankie began humping Tygra. Tygra was very good natured and just wiggled out from under him and took off. Frankie then approached Sashi; not to be outdone by her sister, she didn't hiss and allowed him near her. Unfortunately, he did the same thing to her. She got a good swat at him, which surprised him but didn't hurt him. We decided enough was enough and separated them, less the kittens get stressed out and start hating him. The next day during playtime, Frankie did the same thing. He spent the whole time chasing them around and trying to hump them. We thought that it was a dominance issue at first but now are not sure. It seems to be an obsession almost. Once he goes back to his area away from the kittens, he starts humping his toys. He won't be around them without chasing them and humping them. He's an intact 2.5 year old male; will neutering help? Is this more of a sexual behavior than a dominance one? What are some good ways to break him of this habit? Thanks for any help in advance. |
