| Help me understand him So of course I have problems with potty training (he is 5 month old)... I am trying to pad train him and is not really working...He seems to understand that he is supposed to go on the pad, but he seems to choose not to. If he is the bedroom (where the pads are) and he can not get out, he poops on the pad. If he can get out he goes in the living room (on the other side of the house) which is an open space, and he poops there. When I wake up in the morning (he sleeps with us), I put him on the pad and he pees there. At dinner I usually eat raspberries with cottage cheese, and he loves raspberries. So he goes on the pad and makes sure I see him. And then he comes to me to give him fruits ( I gave him fruits a few times after he went on the pad). So he knows he is supposed to go there. If I live him alone in the room, he goes randomly. Both on the pad and the carpet. So if he knows I want him to go on the pad, why isn't he going? We also tried taking him outside every 2 hours, and he didn't do anything outside and when he came in he peed on the carpet... |

| Puppies are hard, but you are headed in the right direction. I would suggest to not give him free roam of the entire house. Gate off all areas of the house except living room, kitchen for example, or where ever he hangs out most. Then as he gets older give him more and more room. He has to earn it. If he has accidents then restrict the areas he can go again. Taking him outside every two hours is great, even if he doesn't go, it's a good habit to get into. Also feed him at the same times every day so you have a better idea of when he needs to go.

| I would suggest that you put the puppy pads in a room where there is no carpet. Puppies have trouble telling the difference between the pads and carpet... When he is alone, I would confine him to a bathroom or kitchen so he only has the pads to potty on.

I take her outside when I see her sniffing around in her area. We're out there at least 10 to 15 mins. Sometimes she goes, and I reward her with praise outside then a treat when we come in. Most times she just runs and sniffs around the yard, so we come in, I put her on her pad and tell her "potty here" and she pees where she wants...lol. Its frustating, but I'm glad to see I'm not alone with puppy potty training! And Cinders will do anything for a few tiny pieces of orange...lol!

| The only time when he has the whole house is in the morning, because I wake up before my boyfriend to make breakfast, and if I leave him in the bedroom he starts barking and whining and he wakes my boyfriend up. I think this is one of the problems, the fact that he is with my boyfriend all day and he hates being confined. If my boyfriend would be at work, he would be alone in the play pen, and he would get used to going on the pad... But right now he is at home with my boyfriend and he isn't confined because he makes too much noise if he sees someone in the house ... |

| Fortunately I do not have the limited american thinking and I am capable of understanding that is hard to make a career in this economy. I am not going to throw away 11 years of being together for a short period of unemployment. Can a moderator close this thread? It doesn't bring any value to the discussion anymore... |

| Oh for heavens sake! She obviously wants to be a good yorkie mom, so lets everyone just stick to the topic and try to help her be a good pet owner. I usually get up much earlier than I have to so that I can make sure Columbo is taken care of before I do anything else. He is always first on the agenda. I feed him, change his water, then take him outside & make sure he poops. Then I start my day, take my shower, eat, etc. Columbo usually poops twice a day, after his breakfast, then after his dinner. Of course, peeing happens more. If he doesn't poop, then we stay outside or walk, etc. until he does. He's almost 9 now, so if by chance he doesn't go, he'll let me know when he has to. You still need to be vigilant about your puppy because he is so young. I would make sure after his morning meal that he pees and poops, then you take your eyes off him for a SHORT bit, but remember he will have to pee again pretty soon. His behavior will give you clues if he's thinking about going potty. If he's starts to go in a place where he shouldn't, you should be able to grab him fast, tell him "no no" and quick put him on the pad. If he is crying in the morning, can you give him a larger area, like maybe the kitchen with you, and use baby gates to keep him in so that he can run around but you still can keep a good eye on him? When your boyfriend is home with him, he needs to be consistent with this, also. He can have time out of his pen, just always be eyeing where he is, what he is doing. It really IS a lot of work with a puppy and very time consuming. But remember, if you put in the extra time and supervision NOW, it will pay off and you will have a well trained dog for the rest of his life and then it will be easy. It may take several months more of watching him like a hawk, but he will get it if you do this. Last edited by bobohyde; 10-04-2012 at 04:53 AM. |

Yes, the subject is our dogs and potty training. My little guy, who is difficult to handle in so many other ways, potty trained to pee pads reliably once I learned to recognize times and behaviors so I could remind him it was time to potty and where to go. My bigger Yorkie prefers to go outside, but doesn't like rain, so he will go on my screened porch on pads if necessary. Good luck with your training. | |
