Senior Yorkie Talker | Potty training without crate? We got a crate for my 12 week old male yorkie, at first we used a cat carrier but now he has a slightly bigger one. When I put him in, he cries. Like Whining barking really loud. Last night I spent an hour, I told him "No" each time he made a noise. Eventually he quieted down and was half asleep. Slowly I'd crawl a couple feet away, he'd lift his head, look at me, then lay back down. An hour after doing this- when I'm still in view but 12 feet away, my mom wakes up and he starts crying again. She took him out because she said my dad would be home in an hour anyways so hes goiń to cry again. So obviously the crate training isn't going to work for us. At first he was doing pretty good at going outside. But now whenever I put him in the grass, he runs back to the patio (on or off leash) And he keeps going inside, and he does it do quick with hardly any warning. I'm just frustrated because I feel like I'm the only one putting effort into this and I can't get any help from my parents. HELP?!

| Hi there. In order to be sucessful at crate training you will need your family to all be on the same page. If one member takes the puppy out when he is whining he will continue to do that to get out. Do you sleep with the crate in your room? I found that the first week or so, my puppy slept best in his crate when he was near my bed and could see me. If he made any complaints I would gently tap on the crate and tell him quiet and he would quieten down. He now sleeps in his crate for 8 - 9 hours at night. I also made sure he had a cuddly stuffed toy and a ticking alarm clock in his bed for the first little while. |

YT Addict | How about putting a piece of clothing with your scent on it (nothing good) inside the crate with Buddy? That worked for me. I've previously crate trained two of my dogs successfully but I'm going to try something different this time. I'm going to use an x-pen. I bought one of those pop-up doggy tents from CVS for $10 and a soft little bed to put in it. When my babies come home it will go into the pen along with food/water and a pee pad. This is what my breeder, Brenda suggested so the pups have access to food and water at all times. I think it's going to work out well for all of us. I must say Buddy is lucky to have you. You seem to be a very conscientious doggy owner! |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Since it is the weekend and I dont have school, I am going to bring the crate into my room. His crate is big enough to have his dishes in, so he always has access. Im going to put in a shirt of mine or something, a stuffed animal and my mom is going to get a ticking alarm clock. Wish me luck!!

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | One way to help is to quit giving into his barking. Plus he needs to be somewhere away form all of the foot traffic to avoid waking up each time he hears someone move. It is going to be a hard and long road to having a well behaved pup. but it is very possible with hard work and consistency with your training tecniques by everynoe in the family pitching in. I have had dogs my whole life and I now have four Yorkeis that I trained with great success. Here is a link to my site with tips on how I have trained my dogs ! It may or may not work but it's worth a try. Training Tips - Dawn's Yorkies

| My puppy did well in the crate as well as soon as he realized that he was not getting out every time he barked or whined. I never kept him in more than 3-4 hours during the day without taking him outside for a walk. He has always slept for at least 8 hours at night so that's all a person can ask for. I never left food in the crate as like I said I took him out every 3-4 hours at first. Now when we are not home he goes into the kitchen with a pee pad just in case he needs it when we are out. He seems to be fine there as he has a bed to sleep in there an nothing he can harm himself on. |

YT 1000 Club Member | I have a large Crate, but only use it for Emergency Confinement, or transportation in someone else's vehicle and only when absolutely required. A Puppy's complaining about anything, falls on deaf ears in this house ! I have a Doggy Door, and I put the Potty Paper directly in front of it. This is in the Utility Room, and a new Puppy is restricted to that room, Kitchen and Breakfast Room, which are all tiled floor. During the first few days of it's arrival, I always place at least one Adult Dog with it overnight, sometimes two, where it can get used to being with a "strange" female and male. Please understand, I have absolute confidence in my resident animals, or I wouldn't allow any "alone" time between them and a new Puppy. When it Porty's in the wrong place, and that happens frequently the first few days, I blot up the Liquid, or pick up the solid material, and move it over to the Paper. Just a gentle "no", and when I place it on the paper, I praise it, just like it did it there. That positive reinforcement, and following the adults out to potty, abbreviates the breaking to a LARGE extent. A good quality Scent Neutralizer is good to use in those "wrong" places, to discourage returns. It is SO nice to have role models in the training process, potty training included.
