| Pottytrain 5 yro shelter dog?? Hey guys I am new to this website but I've looked at it many times. I was looking for similar situations on here but most people are having potty issues with puppies but my situation is a bit different. I adopted a 5 year old yorkie about 3 months ago. When I'm in school or at work she is crated and doesn't pee in the crate. The first thing I do when I get home is take her potty, take her again before I leave, before bed and another time in between. She sleeps with me and has NEVER peed on bed or in my room. Now, when I'm at home she will pee somewhere and I'll find it by stepping on it. She will even do it about 30 mins after going for a walk! I'm sooo frustrated, I need help. What do I do? |

| Hi and Welcome to YT! I also adopted a 5YO, but a male, 10 years ago! Has she been to the vet to check for a UTI? Limit her access to other rooms, keep her where you can watch her for any signals that she needs to 'go'. Give her a treat and a ton of praise when she 'goes' where you want. Positive Reinforcement can get her out of hiding any accidents. Have you put a peepad down for her? Maybe in her past life she was pad trained...

| Thank you for the quick response. I actually didn't want to do the puppy pads because I don't want her thinking it's ok to pee in the house or miss the pad like other dogs do. And yes, when I adopted her I took her to the vet and she had two huge bladder stones removed so now she's on science diet CD. She holds it in the crate and at night so I don't think that that's the issue. I've tried closing her off from all rooms except where I am and I think it works but then I'll forget to close s door and she does it. How does she learn "outside only"? |

You can teach her outside only by giving her a treat and overly praising her when she does it right, outside. Eventually she'll understand. Also, tell her 'Go Potty' and she'll learn the command while she's doing the action.
