| Desprate for advice on complicated housebreaking situation First of all I just want to thank anyone whom can provide advice, direction or any other strategies to help me make some progress with my yorkie, Loki. He is 100% Yorkshire Terrier, and he was born on May 5 2012. Short version: No matter how much positive and negative reinforcement he gets, or how much time we dedicate, he seems to be making reverse progress. He pees/poos in his cage and if the crate is not available in a number of other spots. We are doing everything right, but hes just not understanding. My issue pertains to housebreaking and I believe it may be somewhat unique. I will describe the facts as directly and simply as I can in hopes of some direction. 1. Loki refuses to go pee/poo outside on the ground. I spend all day outside with him running around, playing, walking, etc and he will hold it all day until we return home. 2. We have somewhat successfully trained him to pee (and if we get lucky) poo on a pee pad indoors, we have transitioned him outside but are struggling with getting him to use the peepad while he's outside. 3. We have a small see-through fence that we wrap around the peepad and we typically bring a chair outside and sit with him saying the key words (peepee) which he somewhat understands as the cue (After about 4 weeks of having him) and furthermore, I immediately reward him with extreme praise and 1 treat (that I keep in my pocket). 4. I have trained a puppy before, there is no limit to my willpower and I will devote as much time as needed to help Loki learn to use the potty outside. 5. He regularly goes pee/poo indoors. we use odor remover and even the 'keep pets away' spray in the spots he uses. 6. His favorite place to go is his crate, even if hes locked up for a very short time. If hes not locked up he will literally open his crate from the outside (theres a toy hanging from the door he pulls) to get inside to pee. It's sooo weird. 7. Most of the time we sit outside with him outside (the back of my apartment is an empty parking lot) for up to 1 hour waiting for him to go. 8. He has never, ever, pee'd or poo'd outside. I believe he thinks its bad.. i don't know what to do! HELP ! Brendan Proud, but a little frustrated Yorkie lover. |

| Tether his leash to your belt loop he wont go potty in the house tethered to you he will wait untill you take him outside. Take him outside give potty command when he goes big praise and treaT. Take a treat something he really likes even if it is something like lunchmeat out with you every time you take him out to potty. Iff he goes out there you want to treat and praise immediately so he knows why hes geting it. For the crate make it no bigger thaN HE can just stand up in. But the big thing is you just want to get him to go potty outside one time so he knows when he does it he gets rewarded then you set a habit

| Hi and Welcome to YT! First, I'd remove the crate and confine him in an Xpen or a spare room or the kitchen, with peepads, a bed and food and water. A young pup shouldn't have the run of the house, and needs confinement when you cannot be supervising him. The main key times he will have to pee is 1st thing in the morning, after play and after a nap. Use these times to rush him outside to potty, or at least every 1-2 hours. Take a soiled peepad outside for him to use or use it to 'scent' a specific area you want him to use. Feed him on a schedule, and time how long after he eats that he goes potty. Then start taking him out that long after his meals. Watch him to learn his signals that he has to 'go'. Sniffing and/or circling are big ones, some pups are not that obvious though. I would only use positive reinforcement on him at this point, I think anything negative may confuse him. Turn the praise up a few notches... make it like something he's never heard before so he knows he did something really special. I carried on so much when my girl finally did right, that finally she looked up at me like I was crazy, but when she realized I was just so happy, I saw a little glint in her eye and her expression changed, like she knew I was happy over what she had just done. Also give a treat.(something he can eat quickly like a tiny piece of chicken or a Cheerio). Let us know how it's going... sometimes things don't work for some and plans need to be changed....

| I found out that treats didn't really work for my baby. After she peed outside I would bring her right in and play with her really hard. She will do anything for play time. |

| Yes, the 'treat' can be anything the pup loves. A toy, even a walk after the potty.... One has to find out what is the pup's most favorite thing and offer that, after a verbal 'yes' or 'good dog' (let's them know immediately they did right while you're getting the treat out of your pocket or getting ready to reward him)

YT 500 Club Member | I kinda have the same problem. Potty trained on pads, then she starts eating poop. Got that hopefully fixed. Now trying outdoor potty, and no go. Shell be out there forever, not do anything, then comes inside and has an accident somewhere. She pees on her pads from what I can see, but later I find poo somewhere else! She's going on 7 months. My older yorkie boy was done being potty trained by 6 months and never had accidents. I'm so frustrated and don't know if I'm confusing her. Don't know what else to do!!!

| My Bella goes on her pee pads and has always refused to go outside. I think it may have to do with how they were treated as a new born. Good luck!

| Bailey is 5 mths old and paper trained sort of...as I mostly want him to go outside. You might try astro turf. I first tried astro turf inside until i found out it doesnt "hold"anything.lol So i tossed it outside the front door...and left it there all day. Thats when he started going there to go poo. Now I have another piece off in another area and he uses that too. He will go for a long walk and pee on every bush to get a treat, but no poo. He wiill race home and go to his astro turf to poo. For the first time last wk he actually went poo when i was out walking him off the lease. Its possible he doesnt want to go while on a lease? Someone also told me that make sure you use different words for each action. I know one person that has their dog to go poo on command...Of course its not a yorkie! Good luck. |
