Walking "aides" We're just a week or so into our formal CGC training with Jaeger (though we've been doing general training from the get go.) I have tried many techniques to get him to heel at my side, and he's a LOT better, but really, at 9 months, he should be a better walker than he is. I want to start walking him with friend's dogs (1 handler per 1-2 dogs, and the others are well behaved walkers) but he's not ready for that yet. A friend with a border collie suggested a gentle leader, and I was going to ask our trainer about it, but I was kind of skeptical that it would fit his muzzle and not be able to be wriggled/scratched off. Also, i looked at the sizing chart. The tiny one is for 5 lbs and under, and Jaeger is 9 lbs. The next size up is 25 lbs and under, and that is a BIG difference between the two. I also think it'd take a lot of work to get him to accept something on his face. Before I got a chance to flat out ask my trainer, she asked me what walking aides I'd be comfortable using. I did research on the easy walk harness, and I like that idea better. It's the same general principal as the gentle leader, but no pressure on the head or neck, and it turns the dog TOWARD you when he pulls/ We've already got a regular strap harness for his tie out (when im gardening, and im with him the whole time) and the car, and he's used to it, so I think he'd accept it a lot better. The trainer said later that the harness was her preference, too, so we're going to pick one up this week. Has anyone used these or any other physical tools for heeling?

I bought a Buddy Belt for Hulk originally. We did puppy obedience with that, but when we moved into intermediate and started working more on leash work, my trainer suggessted the sense-ation harness for Hulk. She said that the Buddy Belt was challenging for him because it "pulls" in all kinds of places, and mainly under the "armpit" so it can be confusing for the dog. Hulk's focus is not the greatest (work in progress), so I figured anything could help with that. So many harnesses..ha! Anyhow, we bought the mini size of the sense-ation and have been using it for a few weeks now. He walks really well beside us, very little pulling ahead. Mind you, if he sees birds etc etc, he will go ahead, but I find it's much easier to teach the concept of heeling and loose leash walking. It's also easier to get him to focus on us as well. She suggested the Sense-ation over other similar concepts because of his size....he's just about 3lbs now. I'm very happy with it, so I'd recommend it as a useful training tool

| I used the Easy Walk harness back when Jackson was a pup and we loved it. He started walking perfectly within a few days. We used the harness for a few months and then "graduated" to a regular harness. They have some front clip harnesses now that has BOTH (d-ring on the back and the front) so it's easy to switch. Also, the Premier Quick Fit harness has both but it's not really targeted as a training harness like the Easy Walk. Here are some: See Spot Shine: Front-Clip Harnesses: Updated Reviews

We have a regular harness for him, it didnt really help-the trainer likes the easy walk because it puts their attention on you when they pull by turning them. The buddy belts are cute, but they arent a training aid, are they?

My trainer said the Buddy Belt was part of the problem with Hulk having trouble focusing on us when he's walking and where we want him to go because the pressure was kind of "all over" and not one particular spot. The front clip harnesses, like the Sense-ation one that we use now are better for that kind of thing. Also doesn't go near his neck, so no trachea worries. Hopefully we can transition back to his buddy belt once he's got the hang of things, because I really liked it, but right now the Sense-ation is working great

We got the easy walk harness last night-big difference! I'm not sure how it would work for a dog with little to no leash/walking training, but it seemed to solidify things in Jaeger's head. I could watch the wheels turning-"Ohh, lady with baby...lets go see...wait! Slight pull when I go forward, I think I'll stay here!" My advice is fit it in the store. (direction said we needed smallest size, but it didnt fit, and store didnt have 2nd smallest size. We were able to (with an employee's help) to fit the 3rd size CORRECTLY. If you can wait (we couldnt, were on a deadline for his cgc test) buy it online after you fit it at the store. It's cheaper.
