Poochie Bells? I have a question....I need to attempt to house train an adult dog who has been allowed to use the bathroom in the house. I know it will make my life easier if I can teach him how to use poochie bells ....how do I begin that with a small dog? I have the poochie bells already because I used them with my chocolate lab....she already knew "high five" and it was easy to transition her into high fiving the bells....after that it only took an hour for me to teach her how to hit the bell and go outside.... my question herein is....how do I teach an adult yorkie who has no interest in "paw" or "high five" or having his feet touched in general LOL....to hit the poochie bells???? i tried for about 20 minutes this morning to get him to touch it with his nose and he had NO interest......i swear he's the sweetest lil dog but sometimes i think he has no brains too LOL ...or maybe too many brains and he just didnt wanna do it

So I didn't train an adult dog to use a bell, but I did train my Lexi to use it. What I did was every so often when I wanted her to go out or I thought it was time for her to go, I would say 'Let's go potty." and then I would ring the bell myself. I would walk out with her, let her go potty and treat and make a big deal out of her good deed. (Good dog, yeah, etc.) Just a few days and she had figured it out and was hitting the bell with her nose. I would still say 'Let's go potty, walk out with her and treat. I sometimes ring the bell still when we go out for potty. Hope this helps.

| my punkee princess was this way when i got her.....and even if there was an accident in the house and i didnt catch her in time...or i was bringing her out to go i myself would ring the bell. everytime we went out i would ring the bell. she eventually got it that it meant going outside and she one day just started ringing the bell when she wanted to go outside and did so consistently until charlie my cat then learned this and would ring the bell at all hours of the night. i then had to take the bell down but by this time she was better potty trained and would bark. she was more comfortable in our house and had actually started to play a lil bit. good luck. consistency is the key.

Thank you....i dont really think the poochie bells will work out so much but i might be wrong.... i guess with a lot of consistency and a lot of confinement he'll come around ) he's going to have to wear a belly band for pretty much all the time though because he was left intact until he was 8 months old and he has a tendency to mark once in awhile.... even though we have no other dogs, we have a cat....and i've caught him a few times marking (with belly band on) i don't really know how to get him out of that behavior or even know if there is a way to do that

I also trained my Roxie to use the bells as a puppy. I rang the bell every time we went out and gave treats whenever she 'pottied' outside. Eventually I tied a treat to the bells to encourage her to ring them. When she went for the treat, the bells rang, we immediately went out. She caught on quickly from there...I was very generous with the treats while trying to establish the behavior and tapered it off some as time went on. To reinforce continuation of the behaviors I still give treats for bathrooming outside (just not every time).
