what now? so the good news is, bunjee stopped crying and whining really loudly in his crate for more than 5 mins to get attention. when he whines loudly it's cause he's spoiled his bedding. the bad news is, his whimpers to get out of his crate to go potty is SO quiet now, i don't hear it especially at night. he used to whimper loudly before he needs to go so i can go get him out. now he's whining loudly AFTER he's done the deed in the crate. last night, i left his crate door open and i got to sleep through the night, waking up at 6am to his whining. when i went to check on him, he's gotten pee several times on the pad, no pee messes off the pad. it looks like he's gone poo on the pad as well, but ate some of it and played with some of it since there's 2 little pieces of poo on the floor, far each other and from the pad but the pad has more poo stains than those two little pieces i see. after i wiped up the pieces and cleaned up the floor and wiped his paws, ass and wee-wee, he whimpered a little bit when i went back to bed, he seems content to go back to bed himself as well. so my question is, is it okay that i leave the crate door open for him at night? or does crate training requires that i shut him in? he's fine with sleeping in the crate, just doesn't like the door closed. he's confined in the kitchen so no fear of accidents anywhere else. if i must close the crate door on him how do i get him understand that it's okay to make a little more noise if he needs to get out to potty, but it's not okay to make all that noise if he just wants out. sorry it's so long, but any advice?

I think it would be next to impossible to teach your pup to whine louder for one thing and quieter for another..... You might try leaving the crate door open (you have to start some time) and let him leave it to use the pee pad. He may want to return to the crate then to go back to sleep. You could just try it for a couple nights and see how it works out. Good luck! Carol Jean

More good suggestions, Carol Jean! HunnieBunnie, you might also consider confining pup in a smaller area with his open crate and pee pads covering the floor (maybe a laundry room or bathroom) to increase the likelihood of his using the pads. You want him to get used to the feeling of having them underfoot when he potties. If he's soiling his crate, he's not learning anything by being locked in there. Here's a link to a good article on crate-training if you decide to start over with it: http://www.clickersolutions.com/arti...ining_Info.htm Good luck!

snowwa on darn, i was so hopeful...thanks for the suggestion. i'll go ahead and try leaving his crate unlocked for 6 hours between the start of bed time and his anticipated morning poop. so i can monitor him for that. i'm just concerned that if i allow him that flexibility now, it'll spoil my chances of training him to go outside. firstyorkie i actually have that website bookmarked thanks for your suggestion as well. i'm currently confining him to the kitchen area. i have a pretty small kitchen, maybe about 4'x10' worth of walking space. should it be even smaller than that? i tried getting him to go outside by taking a potty pad with me and laying it on the ground for him to go potty today. no such luck. he just sat on it and looked at me as if to say "Mommy, you got it wrong, the potty pad is suppose to be UPSTAIRS, not down here. I'll wait." sure enough when we got back inside, he went for the potty pad in the kitchen and went. but that's a whole other battle...

yeap i did read the crate training article, along with a buncha other articles on the site, even the sample videos of clicker training. very excellent site! i've decided to just bite the bullet and continue rigerous crate training. it is better than i wake every couple hours now to get him trained asap, than to have to come home to a possible mess in the future.

Parker is 12 wks and sleeps in the crate at night (right by my bed)for about seven hours now with no accidents. I hear that I should let him in there exclusively, but when I'm downstairs I have a big cage for him with a pee pad just in case. He seems to like the cage, and I feel better than leaving him in a crate.
