| How to Correct Marking? Let me first say that Raley will be 3 years old in December. He DOES NOT AND HAS NOT EVER MARKED. With that said, I have friends who have male dogs that mark constantly. One friend in particular has a problem. She took in a rehomed yorkie that is not neutered. He marks everywhere. What can she do to correct this behavior?????

| Here are some things I would suggest: If he's not already, neuter him and then start a corrective training program wherein he's not allowed to lift his leg without a corrective "uh oh" & gentle redirection away from the furniture and prevent him from leaving your sight until his tendency to lift has abated. Marking is awfully instinctive but so is chasing squirrels and cats and you can train a dog to stay put even when their instinct is urging them to chase that squirrel. I would clean the furniture with the cleaner that removes urine protein and then have a professional cleaner finish up on any furniture he's already marked, denying him access to those rooms for a good 2 or 3 weeks after the cleanings. Play with him extra and take him for extra walks during these times so he stays played down and not so likely to mark out of something to do. Usually it is a a bad habit that starts with an instinct but both can be overcome with determined, patient, loving and never angry training away and a good potty training program, taking them out frequently.

| Thank you! I will pass this advice along to my friend. It would drive me insane having a pet that marked all over the place!!!

My furkids Donating Member | I was using belly bands on Bentley when we first got him (he was 5 months old and not trained) I would also use them at night because he was having accidents in his crate. Back in March he got a HORRIBLE UTI...had crystals in his urine...poor thing was in so much pain..he was acting as if he was having seizures...The vet thought it was liver shunt.THANK GOD it wasn't! When I asked the vet what she thought caused this she told me it was very possible that bacteria from the pad (inside band) could have caused this.No more belly bands for our little man.
