Potty Trained Dog - Introducing New (Partially Trained) Puppy I've been a long-time lurker of Yorkie Talk but this is my first official post YAY! So we've had our first yorkie, Daisy, about a year. She has been fixed and has graduated from her containment area (XXL dog crate since she can escape virtually anything including Xpens with tops) to free roam around the apartment. While we are home we either take her outside or to her litterbox to do her business. While we are not home she either holds it or uses the litterbox since we live in an apartment. My parents have a dog door for their dog which she uses perfectly when we visit. She no longer sleeps in her crate but sleeps in the bed with us.
We have decided to adopt a younger male yorkie (5months) from a friend-of-a-friend who can no longer care for him. Here is the real issue - he is supposedly 90% house trained using a dog door. We are moving to a house in a month where we will have a dog door so we are looking for a short term solution to this potty problem. Do we use Daisy's old confinement area (with food, a bed, and a potty pad or litterbox) and risk unpotty training him to go outside or make the 40min drive (round trip) twice a day to take him to my parents house where he can use the dog door when he is not monitored? Do we make him sleep in the crate at night or let him sleep on our bed like Daisy? We can't just let him pee everywhere but we are unsure what is best in this situation. We don't have him just yet - picking him up tomorrow night so we can monitor him/them this weekend. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated! |
