| Inconsistent pee pad usage I have an 8 week old puppy (yes, I NOW know that the breeder should not have separated him from his mother and littermates so early) that I am trying to train to use pee pads. I have a pen set up where we keep him when we’re out of the house. He has been really good with using the pad when he is in his pen. The problem is when we allow him to roam outside the pen he is much less consistent. For example, this morning when he woke up he used his pad, no problem. When I let him out of the pen to play, over a span of about 20 to 30 minutes, he peed another 2 times in pretty small amounts. I always interrupt him and try and put him on his pad but he seems uninterested in using it. If I close the door on his pen, he just hangs out in there like he doesn’t have to pee. It’s also worth noting, I leave his water and food down at all times. My question, then, is: why would he be using his pad sometimes and not other times? He seems to understand its purpose (so much as to, on occasion, walk from the living room to the kitchen just to use it). I’ve also noticed that when is looking for a place to poop, as he is sniffing for a spot he usually checks out his pee pad, but then opts for a place nearby before I pick him up and place him on the pad and praise and treat him. Does anyone have any thoughts on this behaviour? |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | He's way too young to be consistent, if he's going half the time on the pee pad, that's good. A mother can smell when the pup needs to urinate and will nudge them to the pee pad, so keeping them with their mother can be helpful in training. When Joey was out of the x-pen, my eyes were glued to him and a pee pad was never far away. They will not go far to seek out a pee pad at that age. Some dogs don't like to pee and poop on the same pad, for in nature, they don't pee and poop in the same place. Since you know he can only hold it for about 20 minutes don't allow him out of the pen for that long. Also, ignore the mistakes, and praise the success, as you are doing. If you punish for mistakes, they tend to have later problems with submissive urination or hiding or eating their poop. It's good that you keep food and water available 24/7, some people withhold it thinking that it will help with training, but experts say it doesn't help. Your puppy needs to drink water in order for his bladder to gradually stretch, and food available all the tie helps prevent hypoglycemia. Personally I don't believe that you should expect too much until a yorkie is at least 6 months old, and than it's just 95%!

| mine does that too and she is 13 weeks old this week. She is not interested at all in her pee pads, she goes for our kitchen indoor/outdoor mat, its like 3' x 5', so its like a huge pee pad for her....Thank goodness I can hose it down. I don't know how to get her to use the pee padd either, when I try to put her down on it after she wakes up, she just walks off it and squats either on the kitchen mat on just on the lineoleum. |
