| Escape Artist Pita is really bad about wanting to run out of the front door when someone comes over or rings the doorbell. I have to put her on the other side of the baby gate in the back to insure that she does not get out. Does anyone know of any training techniques that I can use to get her to wait, or sit and not try to make a break for it?....I have been working on stay which she does well with in a calm environment but the second that doorbell rings it's pure chaos! uhhhhhh.... |

| Hi , the "wait" command works really well for this sort of thing. It basically just takes a lot of practice . If you have someone to work with you it makes it a lot easier. Have someone ring the doorbell, put your dog in the sit position and say "wait", approach the door slowly, all the while hold your hand up palm facing the dog, if she moves just say something like uh uh, if she remains still slowly open the door, say wait again, let the person in, close the door then say ok, good girl.. Just keep practicing this till she learns to wait... |

| When mine used to rush the door, I would get between them and the door, then use my body and step towards them to make them get back, telling them 'Back' at the same time. Once they were good at it, I would open the door a crack.... and start over until I could open the door all the way with them sitting 4-5 feet back from the door. The initial training took all of 20 minutes. Now they're pretty good at it... almost 100%. These videos show the concept:
