Won't potty outdoors! The good news is that for the past week Bunjee will pee on the potty pad about 4 out of 5 times whether I'm there to monitor him or not. The bad news is that he won't go when I take him outside. He'll actually hold it until we come back indoors and go on the potty pad. I took him on a 2.5 hour walk the other day, insisting he goes outside before coming back indoors and earlier today, I stood with him outside for nearly an hour in the cold in the middle of night and still nada. He'll play with leaves, he'll walk, he'll explore, he'll sniff trees and grass and dirt, but he won't go potty. But in both cases, as soon as we come back indoors, he can't wait to go to the potty pad and just let it out. Anyone experience this before? How do I get him to go both on the potty pad and outside?

Maybe take a pee pad outdoors with you? Hmmm I don't know, I've been training Binks to go outdoors but I do put a pee pad down at night and he uses it. He still has accidents in the house especially if I'm not paying attention. Boy I think this is gonna be a long hard road, nothing even remotely similar to housebreaking a poodle lol. When I was first reading about them being hard to housebreak, my thoughts were humph how hard could it be, cause I'd always had my other dogs housetrained in 2 to 3 weeks and thought well these people don't know what their doing lol. Well I have learned that this little guy won't let me know when he wants to go out, I think he thinks its to cold out there, so I just have to take him out every couple hours should I forget he goes potty in the house. So anyway maybe if you take a pad with you a few times he will know its ok to go potty out there.

Diego...Bunjee just turned 10 weeks old yesterday. YorkieRose...I guess I'm wondering if he's being confused. I live in a highrise so he won't make it all the way downstairs to potty if I take him out when he needs to go. So in that sense he is doing well in that he's doing what he's trained to do (although sometimes i wonder if he pees in the "right spot" because of the potty pad or if it's his favorite corner of the kitchen). his poo's however, just lands where-ever he feels like it. I'm just wondering how I can convince him that it's okay to go on the potty pad AND outside or at least whenever I say "go potty". suzu1...i'll definitely try that, take the potty pad outdoors (along with 4 paper weights!!! haha) and see if that helps. Bunjee doesn't really let me know that he needs to go potty either. he's pretty much a lap dog, so when he's on my lap, he's relaxed until he needs to go, then he gets up and looks over the edge of my knee to get down, and that's my indication that he needs to go, as opposed to wanting to explore what's beyond my lap. meanwhile with crate training, sometimes it's hard to discern if he's whining to get out of the crate because he wants to go potty or because he wants to come out and play. I had the hardest time getting him to go outdoors for another attempt at potty last night. He does think it's too cold out and definitely wants to stay where it's warm!!! and speaking of crates, a question for all of you, does your pups play with their toys in their crates. Bunjee still isn't going into his crate willingly. I have to trick him with food and toys. If I remove all other toys in the kitchen area where he's confined, and left only toys in the crate, he'll go in to get the toys and then take them out of the crate and play with it outside. if i close the gate on him and he's locked in the crate, he'll ignore his toys and after some whining, he'll just disappointedly lay down on his bedding with a "how could you lock me in" look on his puppy dog face. is this behavior normal? I'm wondering how I can make his crate a "fun place to hang" if he won't hangout in there unless the gate is closed?

I litter pan trained my Maxwell when he was two months old. He is now 8 months and up until a month ago he would use it outside either. He would hold until he came back inside then would immediately go into the litter pan. Now, he done a complete bout face. He refuses to use the litter pan and goes outside. I do not know what changed and very confused about it. I get up at 5:10am to take him for a morning walk before work and again in the evening. Both times he does his business in roughly the same spot. Maybe Bunjee will do the same thing.

HunnieBunnie - a couple of thoughts for you. First, this is gross (especially since you live in a highrise) but you might try taking one of his poops outside and leaving it for him. Let him smell it when you take him outside. Dogs often stimulate themselves to go by smelling excrement. Also, how have you trained him what "go potty" means? Does he potty on command in the house? Last, something else that he may be taking issue with is going on the leash. (I'm assuming that he is leashed outside). Many dogs who are used to going off-leash don't like to eliminate on-leash. Suzu1 - have you tried tying a bell on the knob of the door that you take Binks out through? It's an easy way for them to signal you that they have to go!

No I haven't tried the bell, hmm I'll certainly get one and try that! I was always used to my poodles either scratching the door, barking or just going to the door till ya let them out. Shouldn't be to hard to find a nice bell this time of year.

firstyorkie...thanks for the tips! i'll try to take the poop outside once in a zip lock bag or something. i usually just toss it out right away in a plastic bag down the trash chute then fabreeze the area. can't stand the smell! there is a spot outside where Bunjee went poopie once when he was a little runny so the ground is still stained. whenever i take him back to the same spot, he'll sniff, but he won't go.

10 weeks old? Sounds like he is doing great. It isn't uncommon for them to not want to poop where they already peed. I used to put a clean pad down for shelby right next to the wet one so she would have a choice if she needed to poop. I scoop up poop right away with tp and flush it b/c she won't go near a pad that has that on it. taking a pad outside helped shelby learn. the best time to do this is first thing in the morning when you know they have to go. As above post mentioned, get him used to a potty command, even when he goes inside. Be sure to use treats and praise during this learning period. good luck!

so i was at petsmart today and picked up a doggie litter pan. I put the potty pad in the litter pan and placed it in his regular spot. at first he thought it was a toy. he kept playing the potty pad. but when i sprayed the potty training aid on the pad, he got out of the litter pan. a few training commands later, he went bezerk. he kept running back and forth in the kitchen area. he'd jump in the litter pan, sniff around, then jump out. then he'd jump in and out of the litter pan like they were hurdles, just back and forth, back and forth. i finally took the potty pad out of the litter pan, removed the litter pan and left the potty pad in its regular spot. he then proceeded to sniff, circle, and poo. uh... i guess that means he doesn't like the litter pan?! ya think?!

Gucci was trained to use the wee wee pads indoors and then this past Spring and Summer after endless weeks of trying to get her to go outside.. She finally did!! She would go outside and come back and do her business it frustrated me to no end. But constantly taking her out it finally worked.. I took her out in the morning after she ate breakfast and in the evenings. So she is trained to do both outdoors and indoors. Gucci is 16 mts.I live in NJ and it is cold and snowy so we are indoors. So don't lose hope consistency is the key... Gina

following up... okay so the "outside" thing continues to be challenge. i'm not sure if it's the texture of the ground or what? hubby and i took bunjee out walking and cruising tonight. we were out for 6+ hours and i gave him every opportunity to go potty and nada. at one point, we walked through the shopping area of a hotel, and i felt him dragging, i turned around and sure enough, he was relieving himself on the hallway floor of the hotel. even picking him up didn't interrupt the flow and he made a big ole puddle on the marble-esque floor. i guess he's just been holding for a really long time until we got back in doors. i used the paper towels and disinfecting wipes in my pocket to clean the mess up and hope no hotel security saw us. and then took him to the bathroom to clean himself up as well. but i'm wondering... will the environment temperature effect his desire to potty? is there anyway i can further convey the idea that it's okay, and in fact preferred for him to go potty outside?

If you go to Petco you can find a potty board where you put pads or news paper in. You should learn your puppys body language when he's going to go to the bathroom. So when ever you see him you can put him on his board and praise him when ever he does his business on the potty board. Or you could sometimes give him treats. Thats what I did for Romeo and now he gets the hang of it. There's little accidents here and there but he's getting the hang of it!! You can also get Training drops at Petsmart. To get your puppy to go outside is to take him out every 30 min. and wait for him to go. And if he does go outside praise her and give him a treat. He will get the hang of it sooner or later. Good Luck!!!!
