| Runaway yorkie's Does anyone know how to stop a yorkie from running away? Our 6 year old female, is spoiled rotten and gets plenty of attention, seems to be happy and is well taken care of. The problem is if she should happen to escape out the door. We are very careful not to let her out the door but on occasion she has ran out. Soon as she see the front yard she is " Outta here" .She runs like she is an abused beaten dog. She won't come when we call her. It's like she is in a daze and just runs like H***. Here is the real embarasing part. She won't come if we call her but will stop and run to a complete stranger. Like I said above she is spoiled rotten. I'm so worried she will be hit by a car or someone will find her and we won't get her back..... |

| Our little Zeus does that sometimes. If we yell to him, "Wanna treat?", he always comes back. See if you can bribe her back home! It is horrible what we have to do for these spoiled little rascals!!

| I would love to bribe her but she just runs off so fast it's unbeliveable. ( but I know everyone knows how fast they run) I will try yelling something like that instead of her name. Yes they are so spoiled rascals.... |

| Bolter You mean that sweet angel in your avatar doesn't listen to you? LOL\ "Bolters" can be so hard to change..I have worked with a few I boarded, but never trusted them not to run off..I was afraid to test them out with the door open. I put up a movable folding gate across the front hall area..I have tried the long leash method. You put a long clothes line rope on the collar..about 20ft. Act normal, then walk to the door and open it..most will bolt out and the rope stops them of course..a few learned to stop and look at me..but I still do not trust them not to run off if a visitor opened the door or my husband..only takes one car in the street..so I never took a chance..good luck. |

| That is my problem also "YorkieRose" I don't want to take a chance and let her go on purpose. I couldn't bare the thought of her getting hit or stolen just to see if she has learned NOT to run away yet. I guess I will just keep yelling at my kids, neighbours and visiters to " WATCH THE DOG" that seems to be the normal at our house when the door is being opened |

| I had a terrible problem with neighborhood kids coming to the yard to play with my children. I heard my younger daughter tell a playmate.."if you leave the gate open and my Mother's doggies get hurt, she will kill you with a gun" I guess I made one too many threats that I was going to "shoot" the next person who left the gate open..! LOL |

| I'm so sorry your girl is acting out and running like a wild child. I can definately relate to how stressful this is.When our terrier mix TA was younger if she saw the door just ajar she would bolt and NO ONE could catch her. She is sooo spoiled and loved but she just ran like we beat her. It broke our hearts and when we would (atleast once a week she would sneak out) go out looking and calling for her no one could ever get her. Luckily we live quite a while from the road. But eventually I had HAD it up to HERE with her bolting and not listening so when I saw her in the yard running around totally ignoring all of us I just screamed, "TA! LAY DOWN NOW!!!!!!!!" and amazingly she skidded to a halt and laid down. We were all amazed but realized that she wouldn't listen to us unless she knew we meant business. Now if she does escape we just have to use our "Big Boss" voices to get her butt back in the house.

| At least it makes me feel good knowing that my dog isn't the only one who acts like a beaten and abused while bolting.... |

| bolters I had a stud service bitch bolt out the door early one morning. She was no where in sight and then heard the door open as I was simply getting the newspaper off the step...out she went. Flew across the road, car barely missing her. I had my night gown on and no shoes..there was no time to get dressed. My worst nightmare was to lose someones dog or have it killed. Yes, I ran after her in my night gown..across every wet lawn on the block. As I bend down to grab her I slipped in the wet grass, fell, gown over head, no underwear, several cars blew their horns...BUT I caught her...I swear I would have run down the street naked to catch someones Yorkie in my care...needless to say I had to go home and lay down!! |

| LOL!!! That's a hoot!!! I was standing on my front porch just yesterday with Bailey and I put him down to use the bathroom, and he usually always listens so that's why I didn't think anything about putting him down...well he made a sudden dart to the next door neighbors house...down their driveway as fast as he could...ran up the road in front of our house and right back up our driveway!!! My son took off after him but never caught up with him..The little stinker knew exactly what he was doing too!!! He's never done that before so that just goes to show that you have to be careful no matter what!!!

| One way I used to do I used to have the same problem with my other dog and I asked a trainer and he said that it's because the dog barely gets to go out so whenever he gets the chance , he would run and "explore the world" ...so what we did was take him out whenever we can so he's already use to outside and actually got kinda sick of it....now after we take him for a walk, he can't wait to get home ...so... |

| This was probably the cruelest things I did to my dogs but with 10 of them at the door everytime I came home (big entry couldn't gate) I did 2 things. 1st I started kicking the door (hard) which scared a few of them away and the other thing I would do is open the door and drop a can full of change. I did this for a number of weeks and now none of my dogs will even try to get out the door. They all start backing up. I just couldn't take the chance of trying to reach down to stop 1 and 5 more got out and besides I didn't want to look like Pat some morning

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Magic is the exact same way...we really worked hard with her on "come" and "stay" and thought she was finally there, well the other day she got out the door and she was off, nothing could get her back, no bribe or command made her even turn around!! She finally found a neighbor's dog and was sniffing him when I finally caught her...I was so fustrated, I thought she was learning, but boy was I wrong!!!
