| Chip and our newborn - help please We brought home our newborn daughter from the hospital on Monday. Smokey is great with her. In fact, he seems to care less and is extremely relaxed. Chip on the other hand is infatuated with her and it worries me. He won't relax and especially if one of us is holding her. When I'm standing and holding her, he jumps up and down and my legs and once he nipped at the bottom of her sleeper which is thankfully a little too long for her, but he got the bottom of it and pulled it down some. Another time I bent down to pick something up off the floor when I was holding her and he lunged toward us and when he hit me, I almost fell backwards. Just now I was holding her and she was sleeping, he was sitting beside us, all tensed up, but behaving himself so my cell phone rang and when I went to sit up to look at it, he actually nipped at the top of her head and got her a little bit. He didn't hurt her and she didn't even wake up, but it's the idea. I don't know what to do. I love Chip beyond words, he's been my baby for the past 5 years, but I will not have him hurting my newborn daughter. Please help... I don't know what to do.

| Please... someone has to have some ideas. I'm desperate. He just nipped at her foot when I was carrying her and actually cut her a little.

| Congratulations of your daughter's birth!! When you are holding the baby and Chip is nearby, do you talk to him and pet him so he feels like he's still getting your attention? It's so hard to know what they are thinking or feeling. When my oldest son was born, my beagle was 11 years old and whenever I was holding Michael, I would pet Benji (the beagle) and talk to him so he felt like he was included. Good luck! |

| I think this is a good time to have a professional trainer come in and provide you both with training. Good luck!

| Maybe give him his special treats or toys whenever hes with the baby or near baby. Repeat repeat repeat until he associates the baby with positive things ? |

| Sounds like Chip is feeling insecure with the sudden and drastic changes, and needs reassurance that he hasn't been replaced

| I agree with the others - either get someone in to assess the situation or let him know he is not being replaced and reward for good behavior around your daughter. Like the OP said, he will associate the treats with the baby. Congratulations on your daughter by the way. Good luck with Chip!

| We've been working with him every day. We reward him for being relaxed, calm, or even ignoring the baby and day by day he seems to relax a little more.
