| Questions Regarding Washable Potty Pads Hello all, Currently, Bella is using the Potty Patch from Petco. The problem we are facing is that it smells of urine no matter how many times I wash it. And, every time I wash it, bits of the 'fake grass' is falling out, so it will be sparse eventually. I would like to try the washables by T. Bumpkins & Co, but I have some questions I would like to ask those who have tried them. The upper layer is made of 100% cotton fabric (the same fabric that is used in our clothing, sheets, etc.) How will she know that the potty pad is good to potty on, but that the blanket we use to snuggle with on our bean bag;is NOT for potty? (it's a quilt that is 100% cotton on the outside). Won't the potty pad smell like detergent and fabric softener, the same as the blankets, etc in the house? Additionally, what exactly is on the bottom that keeps it from leaking through onto the carpet or hardwood underneath? It says "leakproof material" but what is it? Lastly, if I order one, am I supposed to put a Nature's Miracle pad on top of it or underneath it or something so she knows that's her potty spot, since it's somethingnew? She knows what a Nature's Miracle pad is for, and she knew exactly what to do with the Potty Patch as well...no coaching was necessary. She's pretty smart when it comes to knowing where to empty herself. I'm worried that will go away with something that smells like her person's clothing. And..I'm concerned that if she's encouraged to go on it, she'll start peeing on other things that are made of the same material. Thank you for any and all information and experiences with these that you can offer. |

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | I will try and answer some of your questions, since I have been using the washable pads for about 4 years now. 1. How will she know that the potty pad is good to potty on, but that the blanket we use to snuggle with on our bean bag;is NOT for potty? Well, this will take some training, because at first, she may not know the difference. One thing that helps is always putting the potty pad in the same place (not near any throw rugs) 2. It says "leakproof material" but what is it? Basically, it is the same thing as the leakproof pads used for hospital beds. It is like a plastic material (but it's not actually plastic - feels kinda like an outdoor tablecloth) As for the Nature's Miracle pad, I'm not exactly sure what that is, but if you put the new pad in the same place that she is using now, that will help her understand this is where she has to go. It may help to put the old one on top of the new one until she "gets it".

| I used the washable pads for a while because several members here recommended them but let me tell you about my own experience with them. I loved them...at first...then I started stepping in wet spots on my throw rugs. Once the rugs were 'marked' the smell was there no matter how many times I washed them or what they were washed in...the smell just gives them 'permission' to use the rug. I have stopped using the washable pads except to cover the seat or my lap when we go for a ride (we have one that gets carsick sometimes) and I take one when we go to the vet to cover the metal exam table. I switched back to the disposable pads with the tray, or without, and things are back to normal. We put a disposable pad down if we leave for the day and at night when we go to bed...other than that my girls go outside to the back yard. We have a new house with new carpet and no accidents...ever...and my throw rugs are, once again, safe. |

| We've used disposables and washables - I like the washables better. Gracie doesn't care, I just don't want to be bothered with the contraption that keeps the disposable locked in so she won't shred it. We keep them on the carpet in several rooms and there is no leakage at all. I wash them in detergent and vinegar which takes most of the urine smell out - at least I can't smell it, which is the whole point! I think you should avoid fabric softener or softener sheets as that could affect how absorbent they are. I change them out every day - she'll use them several times but they do get a little smelly after the pees three or four time (she pees for treats - aarrgghh - so sometimes it's more often than necessary!). Good luck. |

I think they (meaning some) have a hard time telling the difference between their soft, fabric pads and any other soft fabric around the house...especially throw rugs because they are similar. Luckily mine only used my throw rugs and I have replaced them now but others have said their dogs would pee on anything that was soft under their feet after using the washable pads. ie: beds, carpet, throw blankets...etc... So, if you choose to use the washable pads please be aware that you could find accidents on other soft fabrics or rugs around the house. Good luck | |

| If there is an accident on another soft fabric such as a rug, be sure to spray with an enzyme cleaner such as Nature's Miracle. I actually rubbed a little of my dog's urine on the piddle pad to get them started. When the washable pad is washed there is always a scent left that the dog can pick up but a human can not. I have some scatter rugs around my house but do not have much trouble with my dogs mistaking them for piddle pads. If there is an accident is usually an accidental miss. :-) Good luck. ~Joanne~

My furkids Donating Member | I got washable pads from the hospital...they work out great for us...I use my detergent and bleach on them.. you can never totally get the urine smell out of them so they keep going back to them. Matter of fact we just got a new puppy and it didn't take him very long to start using them...

I have found that my dogs do not pee on other items in the house and I think this is because I have kept their pads in the same places for years. They know where the bathroom is. In my opinion, it is a training issue. Just as you can train a dog to potty in a section of your garden, you can also train a dog to potty in a section of the house. As for washing, ours come with specific washing instructions. We don't recommend using scented products, bleach, or fabric softener. Washables are a great option for some people, but like any product, you have to find what works for you and your household. If you'd like to try a washable, my suggestion is to live with one for a while before making a big investment. Should you choose to go ahead and try T. Bumpkins & Co, don't forget to add the code listed in my signature for your YT member discount.

| My three all use washable pads in a litter box (have to step in and out) and a grass potty (have to step on and off). I have never had a problem with them wanting to go on other things that are articles of clothing etc. If you keep the pads in a litter box and in one spot in the house and be consistent with their training( positive rewards, don't give them a chance to fail, set them up for success!) Also, if you are concerned about familiar scents, use a different or non scented detergent when you wash them.

| I forgot to mention the placement but these other posts reminded me. Once Gracie pees on a piddle pad in a specific location, she'll go back to that spot even if the piddle pad has been moved! My DH found that out the hard way - I suspected that it was important to establish a place but no-o-o he figured he could just move the pad. Ha! I was right - but I made him clean up |
