| Dexter not being a good boy Dexter is 6 mos old, We have him 3 weeks. What do I do with a dog who jumps around like a maniac, and will try to nip you when you go to pick him up? He nibbles on our fingers, even after we grab his face, look him in the eye, and tell him “No”. We’ve tried giving him a “time-out”, and sometimes it seems like he just wants more food! What do we do? This is not happening all the time, but more often the last few days. Could this be teething? |

| First, be sure he is getting ample play time and exercise (walks at least once daily are excellent). He's probably nipping to "nudge" you into playing with him, just like he would a litter mate. Second, if he does not listen and gets out of control, timouts should help. Be firm and consistent - do not hit him or yell. Simply say "NO", remove him and crate him then take him out when he calms down (not longer than 3-4 minutes). REPEAT as often as necessary, he will learn. Also, NEVER hit him - he will just act out defensively and become more aggressive. If he bites/nibbles your fingers, tell him no, then ignore him or cross your arms with hands out of reach. REPEAT of often as necessary. Remember that at 6 months, he's just a baby, and needs you to be in charge and train him. Patience and consistency will be your best tools. As far as his food goes, be sure you are feeding according to the directions. Puppies burn a lot of energy and need to be fed more than adults.

| Thanks for the reply. Fist off we NEVER would hit such a precious creature. We do say no. This week when we ask him to come he just stands there. So we have been using a piece of kibble. That usually works, then he won't stay so we can pick him up. This just started where he backs away. For the last 3 weeks we had him he would come over and we could just pick him up. When we take him outside the the big 5ft cage, after his business, he jumps up for us to pick him and up, the when we reach down he backs off. I don't understand it's My Wife, me and my Daughter, we have never even yelled at him, just said no, or down. I know he is teething, we have found 3 teeth on the rug this week. Help.. |

Also, the teething can definitely make him nippy - he just has hurting gums and an insatiable need to chew. I used tie a wet wash cloth into a knot and freeze it for Rocco to chew on - he loved it. Also, bully sticks were and still are indispensible to satisfy their chewing need. Good luck with him - I'm sure he will be just fine with a little bit of time and discipline.

| Now...I am not an authority on training but, I have Bella who sounds a lot like Dexter. She has always been the excited one out of all three of my girls and the one who will jump up, lick you a gazillion times, wag her tail like it's gonna help her take off in flight...just a wild scene if you can picture that. There has been occasions when she couldn't control her mouth as well and little bits of mouthing (teeth included) occurred. Our solution: Each time she reoffended (), she was told sternly, "NO!" and then we would turn our backs to her until she calmed down. It took many attempts but, each time she complied, she would get a treat and 99% of the time she is a good lil' girl but, she is just personality-wise...the excitable one in the bunch and possibly will always be a work in progress. Also remember...you are dealing with a puppy and his antics will linger till he's at least 2 years old but, being diligent and consistent in training on a daily basis is key! Hang in there...it'll get better!

| My Cailee is almost 7 months old and is certainly excitable too. She has so much energy and we try to walk her and Cody (almost 2 yrs old) every morning to "expend" all her energy. She will try to "bite" or nip, usually first thing in the morning. We always give her a firm "no" or "ouch" to let her know we don't like it. Cody was very hyper when he was little. He has calmed down a lot but still is a very active boy at almost 2 years old. Like others have said, "hang in there, it'll get better". It will. Good luck and enjoy your puppy.
