| Grooming....ahhhh!! LOL Tink is almost 12 weeks old and I want to get her used to grooming...and teach her how to be polite about it Right now, she just doesn't sit still unless she's sleeping! When awake, she wiggles and bites the brush...LOL I know she will get better in time as I keep grooming her and correcting unwanted behaviors. But, does anyone have any Yorkie tips? I bought her some little bow barrettes. Her hair isn't long enough yet to need it tied back but I want to get her accustomed to that, too. Thanks! |

| Slow down.... so instead of doing it all at once brake it up so do part of her and give her a break and another part of her and a break and then finish. use lots of hugs and cuddles and food. You are asking a baby to be still and that is way to hard for a 12 weeker to be still when the world is so big and fun and wow got to go see. You can do say start with one swipe of the brush and turn her loose and then two swipes and give her a treat. then say three and a cuddle and then back to one and give her a treat. you want to mix it up and change it so she does not know if she staying for one or three and then work up to six and then all. but slow down and take it easy on her no 12 week human baby has to sit or stand for a whole brush out. we tend to expect way to much from our pups. | I'm not trying to do it all at once. I get a couple brush strokes in here and there. She tolerates the little bow really well i'll just keep doing what I'm doing. |

Katie Scarlett's Mommy Donating Member | Well with Katie Scarlett we started from day 1. We brush her 2, sometimes 4 times per day. We always just have done it all at one time. She has been with us over a month now and is doing soooo much better! She doesn't seem to wiggle as much, so I hope that can give you some hope that it will get better. We always groom in the same place, which is on the couch. I always let her stand in front of me, but I do hold her in place. She wiggled a bit at first, but now she just knows it's coming and takes it in stride. Hope it gets better for you! Good luck!

I did ask for tips and advice...not a mini lecture on something I never said I was doing. Your tone seemed quite condescending. Maybe I misunderstood. And, if you are ignoring unwanted behavior and rewarding wanted behaviors, that IS correcting unwanted behavior. It's called positive reinforcement. As I'm sure you've found, it works really well. I was not intending on any such a mini lecture on your grooming at all. i just point blank things so that it plain simple and unflowered so that it does not get mixed up in others not using correct terms in an attempt to not have people misunderstand. As i have the vast joy of starting more then a few pups down the road of needing five hours of show grooming at a time and then some pending the dog. I am just not used to the simple yorkie having any grooming past a half hour, so i tend to over explain as i used to the having to build to five hours of brush wash dry brush fluff and cut. So if it came out you thought it was a lecture again not intended as such. I just was dealing with way to much at one moment to focus past build the behaviour you want and keep on going. My old gal we have worked through her not liking nail cutting and she not a great one for blow drying all in good time and when i say good time it been 9 years of going slow. We have started the new baby off a little faster as she will we hope go to the ring so nine years of behaviour building just is not going to work or maybe it will if i do nto show her. JLC
