No Longer a Member | My Sweet Pup...turned sour I'm already certain of what happened to turn my once sweet but slightly apprehensive dog into a little evil creature that children run away screaming from at just the sight of his fuzzy face. What happened wad we moved from a cute little house in Italy to a mostly quiet apartment in d.c. I'm not sure what to do though, we've just moved into an apartment complex and Rizzo won't behave on his leash anymore. I have to keep him right on my heel to keep him from running at dogs 100x his size, and every time he spots a stranger he starts to growl and tries to run away. In other words a walk is now chaos and massively embarassing, and he seems to be on constant edge in the house. We've only been in here for a couple days but I don't want this to be a habit formed...any tips on curbing this behavior before I cant take him out of the house anymore without me having to wear a paper bag over my face? |

| Oh! He has been through a lot of changes in such a short time. Perhaps you could try to walk him in a quieter spot for the time being? I don't know what to tell you about the apt. Everything is new and changed for him. Try to make him as comfortable as possible and maybe leave the tv on for company?

| It sounds like he is having a really tuff time adjusting to his new surroundings. Im so sorry. Lots of patience and a little time may help. As for detailed instruction, you might consult a trainer. |

| I'm sorry. Changes suck sometimes. He is probably still just adjusting. I would try your best to make everything a really positive experience. Bring yummy treats along with you.... try to catch him BEFORE he goes into crazy-alert-bazeerk mode and treat him for ANY millisecond of being calm. Try to keep his attention at all times to begin with. If he starts barking at another dog or person, simply turn around and go the other way. Don't let him keep going in that direction or he will quickly learn that barking gets him where he wants to go. Also, obviously a lot of exercise will hopefully equal a calmer dog inside. So hopefully you can find an off leash park to let him run around and expand a lot of energy and THEN maybe try a walk again after he's ran around first? Or maybe I can send Jackson over to you? LOL. Jackson seems to have a good effect on a lot of dogs for some reason. I used to dogsit a Lab and the owner was amazed that I was able to walk two dogs at once as she could hardly walk her one. Jackson basically just ignored his craziness and the other dog learned to just walk normally and stop pulling and barking like a madman. Though sometimes Jackson decides it's better to be a copycat and bark along with the other dog But good luck. I think/hope things will calm down once you are more settled in.

No Longer a Member | He seems to be calming down a bit...indoors he is almost normal again, though any strange noises from the hallway require him to huff and puff and sniff at the door until he's satisfied that no one is going to try to break down the door. He's still crazy around other dogs though, strangely enough though it's just the large dogs that set him off. He seems to want to meet the dogs his size or slightly larger than him, but big dogs set him off. I've been walking him away from everything that sets him off, so we occasionally walk in circles but it seems to calm him down a bit to avoid big dogs or scary looking people. I'm going to keep working with him, and I have to start remembering the treats when we go for a walk. Thanks for the support/advice all, I'll keep you posted. I may hire a trainer at some point, since he's still a nervous ninny around strange people, he's always been that way and we seem to have taken a few steps backward with the move. |
