Default My yorkie pees when he's excited that I'm home! HELP!

Hi everyone,

Was wondering if anyone out there experienced something similar to this and if so, were they able to curb the problem.

Hudson is trained to go outside and can hold his pee for approx 5 hours at a time, as well as through the night. However, sometimes I'll step out for only an hour or 45 minutes and when I come home, I noticed he's peed on the front door!! It's not a lot of pee, so I think it's either marking or him being mad at me for leaving. I can't figure it out!! I also think it could be that he's excited when he hears the garage door go up when I come home and he gets super excited.

I don't know how to curb this and have thought about confining him to the bathroom when I'm gone since the majority of my house is carpet. Up till now, I've been leaving him in one of our spare bedrooms when I step out but he has accidents in there, again not a ton of pee, just a few little dribbles and always on the door or near the door. I've even been debating putting out pee pads but I know its challenging to train him to go there if he's already trained to go outside and I'm not even sure if it's that he can't hold his pee anymore.

THOUGHTS ANYONE?! Thank you!!!

It's called "stress incontinence" (stress doesn't always mean something bad, simply a 'difference') --- should outgrow it when they can better control their emotions/bladder --- if it's a puppy. Very common.

Thanks Kendra!

Hudson is 16 months now. Is that still considered "puppy"? Is there anything else I can do to help him control his excitement or keep him from getting stressed out?

It could be the excitement pee. Do you make a fuss when you do come thru the door? Even if you think he's getting excited when he hears the garage door, you should just come in and do not acknowledge him until he's calm down. Can you try leaving for short periods of time...say like 5/10 minutes and come in but do not fuss with him until he calms down? Keep doing this to make sure that he's getting used to you coming and going.

Maggie May had it and she did outgrow it. Maggie peed whenever she got so excited when we came home or when we saw another dog. She had submission pee as well. She would do this in traning class.

In the meantime, you can either put him the bathroom where it's not carpeted or you can put a belly band on him until this (hopefully) stops. I do offer belly bands if you are interested in this method.

Good luck.

Jamie had the excitement pee until very recently. She is now almost 26 months so maybe your baby may still outgrow it.

We call this "sprinkling" at my house. Only happened when Jax was sooooo happy to see you. We just downplayed our entry like others have suggested and now that he's a little older - almost 1 year, it has pretty much disappeared. I so love that he's always happy to see me and now can make a big deal and love on him without being sprinkled.

Thanks! I'll do a more concerted effort towards coming and going for short periods of time to see what happens. I've heard about belly bands but aren't really sure of how they work. Thanks for offering though, I'll have to look into it.

Thanks Carol!! I really do hope that Hudson grows out of this situation sooner rather than later. I love him and already take him out with me to a lot of places but want to feel more comfortable leaving him at home if I need to run quick errands.

Bentley has done it. must be a male thing? he's also peed when frightened by his mean sister. i dunno maybe it's just anxiety or excitement. not much advice to help from me. i understand the frustration though.

Cody is 20 months old and occasionally he will sprinkle when he first sees us or one of our friends. It's usually if he hasn't been out for a while and someone comes in and he gets excited. It's not happening very often any more so I hope he growing out of it.

I just ignore mine for a few minutes. If I start to play with her or make any fuss as soon as I get in the door, she gets overexcited and has an accident. Even if you're only gone for a few minutes, the dog always seems to react like you've been gone a week (at least my Lola does). I just sit at my computer and make a show of taking off my shoes, putting away my purse, stuff like that while ignoring her. She follows me around jumping till she finally calms down after a few minutes then I acknowledge her. Her excited accidents stopped after that.

You have gotten good advice. Keep coming and going low key. No touch, no eye contact, no talk, until you have hung up your keys , kicked off your shoes, and put your purse on the book shelf, oh that is my routine . But, you understand what I mean.
I would use belly bands for Abba, he is not neutered if he was greet peeing or marking. I think Mom to Hotrod and Teddy Bumpkins have wonderful products for our Yorkies check them out.

this is what we had to do with our dacshaund. He would piddle the minute we opened the door. Now we ignore and he no longer does it. Of course, he did have an accident when my son got home from military leave. He hadn't seen Cory in a year and Cory was so excited to see him he forgot to ignore him. But that is ok. I almost had an accident when I first saw him too

My yorkie is 10lbs but is not able to hold through the night and sometimes he does 'sprinkle' out of excitement.I now use belly bands and they are the best invention ever. All I have to do is change the pad in it and I no longer need to worry about shampooing my carpet all the time.
