| Potty training/crate question Hi all. I just picked up my baby girl Finley (10 weeks old) last Friday. We are doing really good at loving our crate and have only had 1 accident in it (poop, which was no ones fault because poor girl couldnt go for her first 24 hours in her new home), going potty outside when taken, and eating and drinking like a champ. My only concern and this may just be part of the training is when in the house she literally can pee every 20 minutes. I feel like we take her out and 20 minutes later she is peeing inside, which has resulted in us basically living outdoors. I do not want to use puppy pads because it is not a habit i want to instill in her. Does anyone have a good day timeline as to how much playtime, outside of cate, and inside crate we should be doing in regards to teaching her to hold her potty/potty outside? I dont want her to be locked up at all times but she does her best at holding it for several hours while in there and only 20-30 minutes outside of it. I know Yorkies are very hard to train (this is my 2nd one, the first had to be given away during my divorce several years ago, and my parents have one as well) but any helpful tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!! |

Owned by Bella & Tibbs Donating Member | She is really young!!!! Just a baby and they do pee a lot! It's gonna take a lot of time for her to really know what she is suppose to do. My Tibbers is 20 weeks old and he still has accidents and we have had him since he was 6 weeks. Bella is about the same age as your baby and well with her its hit or miss....sometimes she remembers to go on the pad sometimes she pees in the floor. Positive praise when they get it right is what I find helpful. Tibbers has really responded to it we have had maybe 3 accidents in 2 months. But my advice is time and love!!! Stay positive!

| I can't remember where I heard this, but I was told a baby Yorkie's bladder is the size of a lima bean. While this all sounds normal to me, you might want to make sure she doesn't have an infection of some kind. When she gets a clean bill of health it will probably take awhile before she can hold it long enough to make the training worthwhile. Furthermore, the problem with potty training Yorkie's isn't the breed, it's the size. To a Yorkie a home is so big they can easily make a part of the house their bathroom and it won't both them at all, at least that's what a trainer told me. |

We went to the vet yesterday for shots and I asked and they said puppy's will drink out of boredom and to maybe not let her have too much water. While it sounds cruel to me she does drink a ton. I jut want to make sure I am giving her enough playing/crate time for it to be effective. | |

| You have a very young Yorkie and her bladder is very tiny...be careful with a Yorkie and restricting water...they are prone to UTI...I have seen a puppy play with water and the dish, but they drink when they are thristy, not bored IMO.... I respect anyone who has a 100% outdoor trained Yorkie...never had or wanted one...I love the fact I can travel..go in a restroom or hotel, strange places...put down a small pad and mine pee...I have put a pad on the floor of the car during a trip..and they use it...can't stop at a rest stop in freezing weather and rain.... I have two girls at 3 pounds as adults...I am lucky to get 3 hrs between wees...best wishes |

| If you want her totally outside trained and the crate is working for you, then I'd go for that. You'll have to decide if you think it's cruel. I don't. My puppy is crated a ton to limit accidents and stop the chewing/eating things that aren't edible. I just can't watch a dog for 16 hours a day. Assuming that everything is okay medically, I'd be taking pup to pee, praising like crazy, playing for 15 minutes, back in crate for at least an hour, out to pee, play for 15 minutes, crate for at least an hour, etc., etc. if that is working for her. Now if she is in there crying to pee, you'll have to figure something else out. The only reason I can think of to restrict water is if this is a medullary washout situation. Sometimes dogs overdrink, their kidneys stop concentrating urine correctly, and then they have to go more. A urinalysis would give you much more info and rule out infection which would be a big concern. Could just be that it's a tiny puppy bladder though. I would not say to restrict water in a thirsty dog who constantly urinated because on the off (very unlikely) chance that diabetes insipidus is present, that would not be safe.

| I def didn't agree with the water part, and I have left it out for her except 2 hours before bedtime. But she does drink a ton, but we are also in Dallas so who could blame the babe??!? Today she had no accidents (yay!) and i think we are slowly figuring out a routine of enough play time and crate time. She is a little smarty pants so far! |
