| Can I train my yorkie to go on a pee pad in the winter? We live in MN and our winters are very harsh, there were times last winter I would open the door and Lucy would take one look at me and turn back inside and then a few minutes later there would be an accident. I have to say that since her accidents are so small it doesn't bother me that she went inside BUT I don't want her to be confused or have mixed signals. We got Lucy when she was 2 1/2 and she was outside trained by her first owner so we continued to take her outside but here are my questions: Can I train her to go on pee pads inside in the winter when it's just too nasty outside for her to go out? Will it be confusing for her if we take her outside and let her go inside too? I am a fairly new yorkie owner so I am just not too familiar with inside pee pad training at all and not sure if they can be trained to do both outdoor and indoor bathroom time?!

| I tried this with my Jack Russel terrior and I never could get him to use the puppy pad. Our winters can be cold as well so when I got my little yorkie, I decided I would puppy pad train her so the winters wont be an issue. I still take her out with my Jack Russell but she's trained for the pads. |

| I think it is harder once a dog is already outdoor potty trained to re-learn to do both. Because they've always been taught going inside = bad. With that said, nothing is impossible and I think it can certainly be trained. Dogs are smarter than we give them credit for. Jackson likes the cold and the snow however a few of our storms were like impossible to even walk out the door. And I would BEG him to go in the garage or on the porch -- he rarely would do it. The porch he would because it had about a foot of snow inside of it (even though it was screened in, lol) so that was nice. But I was never able to get him to go on the pad when I briefly tried as a pup. But I'm happy with him being outdoor trained so I just deal with the winter.

| I agree, nothing is impossible. Teddy was 8 months old when I brought him home from our breeder's house where he had outdoor access and was fully outdoor trained. He took to peeing on the pad immediately, but pooping was more difficult to convince him to do inside on a pad. It took about 2 weeks and it was very emotional because he wanted to do the right thing and go outside. I had to barricade him in the back hall covered in piddle pads and tell him over and over that is was okay. We really needed him to be pad trained. When he finally pooped, I threw a party and showed him how happy I was. From that day on, he could do it. My boys still prefer to go outside, but they can use the pad when necessary. Go for it Ann.

| My puppies are peepad & outside trained. I have noticed they only use the peepads if coffined in the X-pen. The rest of the time they go to the door. We have a doggie door on the screen porch, sometimes they stop and pee on the welcome mat then go out. They are 5 months old. My adult dogs are only outside trained. |

| Yes, it can be done. Mine prefer to go outside but will use the pads if no one is around. They hate the cold so go inside most of the winter.

| Yes, it gets so windy here I honestly thought she would blow away if it wasn't for her harness and leash...it can be seriously nasty here. I think I will try to do it and hopefully on those days that she doesn't want anything to do with outside she will come in and use it because there were times that I knew she had to go but she wouldn't go out because of the bitter cold-not to mention the sometimes 4 feet of snow that there is out there (we shovel out a spot but sometimes we don't get a chance before she has to go). I have her all bundled up but last winter was one of the worst winters. I am going to definitely try it for her sake!! Quote:

| Well I am going to give it a shot for her sake because I just don't want her to have to deal with the snow and cold. She did go inside (accident) a few times when it was just too nasty to go out so I know she will go inside it will just be a matter of training her to go on the pads. I bundle her up and even have boots for her but seriously the amount of snow and the nasty winds we get up here are not fit for humans or furbabies!! Quote:
I have a feeling she may prefer to go inside in the winter it will just be a matter of training her to go on the pad instead of the carpet! We will see I guess.

| well, I think I'll start training my Jack to use the puppy pad. It would be so nice not to have to go out in the snow this winter first thing in the morning. |

| [QUOTE=DvlshAngel985;3641512]We had the same issue. Kaji would much rather potty outside, and will ask to be let out when we are visiting in other people's homes. At our apt, going outside just isn't possible. He was 17 months old when I switched him to piddle pads only. I did something simar to Kristin's method. Kaji kept his exact same schedule, but instead of being let out, I took him to the piddle pads. He was praised immensely when he went on the pad. It took 2-3 weeks, and now he's super reliable. Is his pad is soiled, or my mom moved it, he will go get a human to put a pad downfor him.[/QUOTE They are so smart!!! I will give it a shot and see how if it works but I have confidence in her because she is smart and who wants to go outside to pee when there is 3 feet of snow and it's 25 below zero out there!?

| Add us to the list of dual trained , it can be done for sure. It takes a little longer for one that has been going outside all their life, but it is doable! I trained my 14 year old Maltese to pads, and it did take a few months, but she got it. (her health was declining and i didn't want to make her go out in the cold any more) I kept her in her own separate space during the training, and covered it with pee pads so she would have to use them, and gradually took one a way at a time. My three current babies, were all trained both ways from puppyhood, so they caught on pretty quickly. I know exactly what you mean about MinneCOLDa winters...
