| PLEASE help before I go nuts.. potty issues!! First let me say this is my first yorkie and first puppy that was not already potty trained!! When I went to meet my little guy the first time the breeder handed him to me and after a few minutes said he looks like he needs to potty put him in the playpen in which as soon as I put him down he did potty... once again when I went to pick him up same thing happen... not thinking much of it I get home and put him in his new kennel for night one... well to my horror kennels and play pens mean go potty time to my little guy so of course that is just what he did and then more or less danced in while begging to get out... so insead I have been putting him in the kitchen blocked while at work.. now I take him out when I wake up and of course he just plays in the grass and that is all then while I am in the shower he uses his favorite spot in front of my fridge which is next to where I keep the potty pad I again take him out before I leave for work and once again just plays in the grass... 4 hours later a friend comes and lets him out to once again just play in the grass lol and then when I get home he goes out.... ALL HE WILL DO IS GO IN FRONT OF MY FRIDGE well except today he managed to go up the side of the fridge which I have yet to figure out the talent used to do that. Let me back up and say that for 4 days I did have luck in him going outside... NO SUCH LUCK ANYMORE!! WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?????? The teacher at his puppy school said take to poo outside to where I want him to go... tried that and of course he walks over to it turns up his nose and walks away. I am ready to give up and duct tape daipers on him at this point... or just cry lol |

| To get Princess to go on her pads I would soak the pee up with it, then when she'd smell it I'd praise her like crazy. The same thing with the poop, though she almost always goes in front of the toilet still, instead of the pad across from it. I would also just give him a treat for acknowledging the poop outside at all. Pretty soon he'll think 'oh, this poop out here means a treat. hmm...' Good luck, it is said yorkies can take longer than average to train & Princess proved that to be true. Just hang in there & be consistent.

| Well that brings in another problem with him lol At his puppy school we are required to bring 3 different types of treats a week for training and he does everything on command in class and takes his treat as reward then walks over and puts it in a pile... he will take treats from you all day long BUT will not eat them... so I do not know if in his mind he is just thinking gee thanks why do you keep giving me this stuff LOL The ONLY reward that works is cheese and you can only reward so much with that before you have a bloated puppy that does not need potty time haha |

| How long do you stay out with her? 5 mins, 10? I think 15 to 20 mins is good for them to be out at a time. Another tip, harness and leash. Don't let her go out there to play. Give her a command, and as soon as she goes, treat and praise! If she doesn't go when you give her a chance to, take her in, confine her for 5 mins, and try again. Keep her on a schedule. Take her out to potty at the same time everyday until she gets it. Potty training is a long process.

| I sat outside for 30 mins one day... other days I try 15 mins then come inside and try again. I think tomorrow night I will try the kennel at night and hope for the best... because he is starting to chew my baseboards in my kitchen while I am at work. I swear I sound like I am doing nothing but complaining the little guy LOL but really my only issues is the potty time, eating my baseboards, biting me and digging at my leather couch. Other then that he is great... been home 3 weeks and I just found out today he barks or at least barked once... I was starting to wonder if he had it in him |

And no, you're not complaining. Trust me, there could be worse things you could deal with.

| I bet he is just really confused. Sounds like he came from the breeder and was allowed to go on pads or newspapers constantly. Then he developed a liking for in front of the fridge. Now he is being expected to go outside (on the grass) and inside (next to the fridge on a pad) and not in the kennel (like he was probably "trained" to do before. This could take a lot of time. Many pups are trained to pads and grass; however, I would stick to just one right now. He needs to develop a desire to eliminate on certain surfaces only. If you are gone for very long periods, peepads may be best. He will learn that going on grass is okay later. He should be confined during the day. Waaay too much freedom. Too young still. Not good for behavior or safety to have that much stuff to chew and get to when you aren't there. The kennel needs to be small if you don't want him to go in it. If you are pad training, then you'll probably want to use an xpen. But if you are going to outside train and want the kennel to stay clean, then you can start feeding him in there and making it his "home". If he saw it as his home, he wouldn't be pottying in there so much. ETA: I am not a big fan of peepads and choose to try and avoid them. They can confuse them with rugs and blankets. I like my pups to go on grass, but that isn't always possible. Soak the peepad in pee and put it in an xpen with him. Or you could soak it in pee, put it in front of the fridge and block him in the kitchen. Then if you goes on it, you ever so slowly move teh pad to where you want him to go. But that said, the kitchen is too big of a space to use to train a pup lots of time.

| I agree with Ellie May......the secret to being successful is confinement and catching the accident when it happens and correcting it immediately. When an accident happens, scold and bring the pup to where you want him to go, then confine. You must decide whether you want to use pads or outside but using both be confusing. My husband and I chose pads b/c we don't want to bring our dogs outside as they are too small. We used a small pen and covered the floor with pads. Gradually pick up one pad at a time over a period of days until the dog is only using the one pad. If there is a mess-up, put all the pads back down. It is tedious and takes LOTS of time and consistency but is well worth it. Another tip is that the puppy is confined if you aren't actively playing with him or both eyes aren't on him at all times. Why? B/c that is when you catch accidents and correct them. It was very hard for me, and especially my hubby, to have such a cuddly, cute, puppy locked in her pen most of the time but it is utterly necessary for potty training. Hope this helps!

| So since I am really not a fan of pee pads either and would love to get him to the point where he knows to go outside I decided tonight I would feed him in his kennel with the door open... this is a small kennel so there is enough room for his small bowls him to lay down and a toy is it... worked great he went in to eat even sat and played with his little sheep for a bit... so I figured let's try bedtime in there took him outside walked to the tree where I have put his droppings waited 10 mins with nothing took him back inside for a little while then tried the outside thing again with no luck... so I told him night night and locked him in the kennel yea not even a minute later a nice big cow patty in the kennel next to his empty food bowl I kept in there in hopes that would work. And while I am complaining HOW do I punish for jumping against and sratching my leather couch? If I push him away and ignore him he thinks I am playing... if I just ignore he jumps more..... he sooo lucky he is cute LOL |

| i feel your pain. Morgan will go outside and potty but he also will come back in and pee on the floor. If i put him on his harness he will not go potty no matter how long I stay out there and as soon as I come back in the house he will go. He sleeps in a crate at night so he will wake me up to go potty at night. he is 15 weeks old and I can't wait till he is potty trained. He starts his puppy classes on the 20th so I am hoping he does well with that. I love him to death regardless |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Total tangeant - before Thor was trained, he kept peeing in front of the fridge too. I wonder why that is? Maybe it's warm?

| Your biggest job in all this is consistency and patience. Think of it like this: you speak English and someone is teaching you a foreign language (French or Spanish). Do you think you would know it and be good at in a week without making any mistakes? Absolutely not! What about a month? A few months? Likely not. Well, your puppy is learning a new language so-to-speak. So give your pup the same patience and BE CONSISTENT!!! One slip up by you and you lose all the reinforcement you have built up. I would also recommend that you watch Cesar on National Geographic b/c he is very effective with teaching dogs what to do and what not to do. Plus, he's very entertaining.
