| Venting my frustration (potty woes) I know I am not alone in this, but I just needed to vent... Teddy is 6 months old. When we got him in the Spring it was really rainy and wet. If it was cold or rainy Teddy would not eliminate outside no matter how long I waited or how often I tried. He always waited until he was inside and would go, so I figured I would pad train him with the thought of having him pee and poo where I wanted him to if he was going to go in the house. Took a while, but not long, before he was going pretty consistently in the box on the pads. Teddy has two places on the main floor to go...one in the family room and the other in the dining room (no laundry room which is a bummer). Upstairs he has a pad and box in the master bath. Teddy sleeps with hubby and I. During the night he will climb down and go in the bathroom if he needs to. Thankfully he is really good with that. He has been consistently using his pads for the past few months. This week, however, Teddy has pooed once in front of hubby's closet door in the bedroom during the day, and twice he's gone in the living room and once in the family room, this time about 5 inches away from his box. I cannot tell you how frustrated I am. Hubs wants to replace our 15 year old carpet, but I can't justify it out of fear of Teddy destroying it. I know yorkies are notoriously hard to train, but I am just tired of always being on guard for accidents. I love Teddy to death and so does my hubby and my boys. Is it always going to be this way with him? I am not new to dogs, just to Yorkies. I have raised dogs for handicapped people (poodles, labs, goldens), had my own pets (border collie, ckcs, dalmatian, mutts), and have had them trained in less than two weeks. Please tell me there is hope! Thank you for letting me vent!

Thor's Human Donating Member | Yep, I remember the pain of potty training. Don't worry, you will get there. There is a ton of good advice here on potty training. I really don't have anything new to say, but maybe this bears repeating: - Until your dog is reliable, he must either be crated, or you are watching him with BOTH eyes. Generally speaking, you should keep him confined to a small area until he is 100% reliable in that area, then gradually increase it, wait until he is 100% reliable in that area, etc. You can try the "umbilical cord" method if that works better for you. - Your dog might be "poop strolling": starting in the right place, and walking around until he drops in an entirely different location. The best way to know if that's happening is to be watching him closely at all times when he's roaming. - You can control when your dog poops. Generally, about an hour after he eats, so if you control the food schedule, you control the poop schedule. Also, you can teach him to pee/poop on command so you can see him going and be sure it's in the right area.

| Ziva will not pee on her rainy day/ dark outside garage tray if she has already pooped on it, or otherwise deems it "unclean"( I wash and disinfect a few times a week). She will pee(or poop) right next to it if there is a previous unremoved deposit! Can't complain about her cleanliness... |

| I feel your pain... just put down whole house new carpet (except where the hardwoods were). Georgous Martha Stewart Sharkey Gray, 20 year stain and wear warranty. And then here comes Max... When the carpet went down (because two trees fell on my house and caused gaping holes for the rain to come in), I went into Swat Team mode on potty training. Let me correct that -- there is no 'swat' in my potty training... just intensity. Max does good when I do good. I hardly ever see this little 5# guy drinking, but he can pee 2 oz every 45 minutes! Where does he get it?! Anyway, I confine him and his 'brother' Marley to the kitchen and family room (hardwood) with pads along with regular potty breaks, and if I do good, they do good. I've found that a tiny, ti-i-i-ny piece of stick cheese after successfull pottying goes a long way. After a successful pee, I gush "Goooood Potty!!! Let's go get some scheeeze...! Is working wonders. For the times that don't work, get yourself a jug of Nature's Miracle enzyme cleaner and a stack of 'pee towels' and, as a previous poster advised, beat yourself about the head and shoulders with a rolled up newspaper because you didn't watch your dog. |
