| Winter potty time I own my first yorkie. He is 8 months old and is housebroken. Will he backpedal when it gets cold outside and not go outside to go potty? I am concerned about this. |

| My two love the cold weather and they especially love to run in the snow. I hope your little guy will like winter weather too. You are very fortunate to have a housebroken pup at 8 months old. I think mine were around 13 or 14months when they finally figured out that they were supposed to 'go' outside. lol Welcome to Yorkietalk. Good to have you here. Stick around and you will learn all you ever wanted to know about Yorkies!

| We have Ozzy trained to go outside also, and since this will be his first winter coming up we have gotten him a sweater and we have a rain coat on order. We live around Vancouver, BC, Canada, so the winter weather here is usually pretty mild. Not sure what we will do if we get heavy snow, but we'll figure something out. I find that at this point, if it's raining outside Ozzy just wants to do his business and get back inside which is fine with me!

| Zhoie started using it outside on her own full time at 5 mos and she is 2.5. Rain and snow are not her most favorite times, but she still doesn't go inside. However, I do dress her for the weather. If it's raining, I put on a rain coat, if it's cold she has a winter coat. If we are going to play in the snow for a little bit, she has a snowsuit and boots. That pretty much takes care of it. Wishing you the best of luck...try dressing for the weather.

| What is this winter you speak of???? It's 108 degrees here- not sure we'll have a winter. But I hope it's not like last winter-ugh! My kids missed 4-5 days of school for the first time ever for ice/snow. It was crazy!

| mchelem our winters can get to 20 below 0. My husband laughs when I talk about a coat and booties. The St bernard does too. I guess a trip to petco is in store for some winter gear. Thanks everyone! |

| Darwin & Mabel don't like winter too much but I don't give them another option. I put a sweater or coat on them and we keep the walks short. We had a LOT of snow this year and after a couple of weeks they just knew to do their business as fast as possible. |

| Tibbe went out when it was 8 or 9 degrees and snow and ice on the ground. He goes out when it is 109 or when it is pouring rain hard and fast. He doesn't let anything stop him from doing his duty outside!

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | For pee breaks, I don't bother putting a coat and booties on my dogs. That would drive me to drink as often as they want to go out. Instead, I make sure I've shoveled off a path to where they like to go and I make sure I'm available to let them back in the second they're ready. I have seen Yorkies balk at wet ground or cold snow. I think the secret is to start while they're young getting them used to as many different surfaces as possible. I walked my pup through wet grass, then puddles, mud, weeds, playground material, etc. The more you can expose them too, the more easily they'll accept snow. For longer walks, definitely go the bootie and coat route. Mine don't especially like putting them on, but they'll stay outside comfortably in winter when they have them on. When they don't have them on, I notice they'll pick up their feet uncomfortably after as little as 5 or 10 minutes. When the temperature drops lower than -5 F, though, I cut walks short -- or at least watch them closely to make sure they're not overly distressed.

| Callie has a doggie door and gets to choose when she gets to go outside to go potty and even when it was snowing she never choose not to go out when she had to go potty she just goes fast and runs back in.

| Princess is pad trained now, but was going out last winter. She was 9-10 months old & she LOVED the snow. She'd do her thing then bounce around like a bunny. We'd come in & I'd have to get the snowballs off her legs. When we had sub zero wind chills she'd get pretty cold, but she would've stayed out there longer if I never noticed. I'm actually looking forward to the snow, she seems to have more fun outside in the winter than the summer. -5, Mikey? Cut walks short or watch closely? That must be an Alaskan thing.

Jackson is a winter dog, he'd prefer to be out there in the snow than indoors. But I will say, it's a pain in the butt for ME, waiting for him to go potty, freezing my butt off.
