| Help!! Puppy playing with her poop & got it all over the place I have a problem with my baby playing with her own waste. If I can't clean it up right away, she would drag it out of the litter box and play with it. She got it all over the place and on her pretty face, too. I always have to leave her in a play pan with a plastic sheet underneath when unattended. At first, I thought she was just not happy about being left alone at home. But even when I am home (which I am most of the time), she would always find a chance to do that - like when I am cooking or doing the dishes. She is almost 6 months old. We don't relly let her wondering around by herself if we can't watch her as she might get into serious trouble unsupervised. I have read a lot of book on dog training without any luck. It's so gross that I had to bath her almost everyday. I don't really think they can be bath that often but what else can I do? If any one have gone thru this, please let know how you handle it. We can really use some help here. |

| lol, I don't mean to laugh but I know EXACTLY how you feel. Lilly was doing the same thing; she thought it was a toy and thought it would be fun to growl and attack her poop. It was sooo gross and she would get it ALL over the place (including up the walls). This usually only happened at night when I wasn't able to clean it up right away. Now I have made it a habit to get up around 3 (that is usually when she goes) and clean it up as fast as I can. I haven't had any problems in a few weeks. But you never know with her lol. I think it may just be boredom. |

| There are some tablets you can get at Petsmart to discourage them from eating their poop....We tried it and it worked for us

I know she got up real early in the morning - around 5. She usually play with her toys and her poop before I got up. It's getting harder for me to get up early these days as I have been getting up quite a few time at night since I got her. Thanks for sharing. I got to stop this nasty habit somehow.

| I really need help here. Somebody? Anybody? Please! I don't want to bath her so often as it can't be good for her skin and coat. However you can't really let her running around with the stuff on her. It's really gross. I can't hold her or play with her before I can give her a bath. Any other ideas? |

| As far as her baths go - if she gets poop on herself, she is going to have to have a bath....right? Can't blame you there! When I first got my little dog, she would always turn around and start smelling her poop - I'd always tell her "No no no" and quickly take her away. She seemed to respond to this - and we haven't had much of a problem. But - I know what you mean. My little Bichon thought the cat's litter box was full of toys. I was always after him. I don't have the cats now, so that solved that problem. I have heard about the pills one poster mentioned. They would certainly be worth trying. You'll never believe this one. I had one dog that was so clean that if any of my other animals went to the bathroom in the house, she would hide under my bed for hours so she wouldn't get in trouble. And, if I wasn't home, she would take any pet's poop and move it and pile it up by the back door. I actually caught her doing this a couple of times. Good luck! Carol Jean |

I had try the pill and it did work for a while but then I think she got use to it. She is almost 6 months old now. I though if I can catch her in the act and tell her to leave it she might stop. But she wouldn't do it when I am in the room (unless I was cooking or in the bathroom). She is too smart sometimes. I can't believe I am trying to out smart a puppy. She should be the one who's trying I am glad you don't have the problem any more. I just gave her another bath last night 'cause it's hard to play with a dog with pooping on her. She would jump around and small pieces of you know what would be falling down from her and that's just too much for me handle. I got to catch her in the act somehow. Thanks again for writting me back. Have a happy holiday.

| Just a thought but it sounds like you are using the "litter box" approach - I think the terrier breed is known for digging so perhaps she enjoys playing (digging) a little too much. You may need to try something different as far as housebreaking technique. I have seen quite a few links discussing the fact that their dogs are doing the same thing. Perhaps you can do a history search and find additional information. I know with one of our dogs who did the same thing, we constantly were watching over our shoulders to pick up anything as quickly as it fell or she would also feel the need to scatter it around. Best of luck to you!

It never hit me that she might be "digging" as there was no litter in the box. I think you are right 'cause the closest thing to dirt in the house is her poop. Now that could be a problem. I did try to get her outside to go potty but she wouldn’t do it. We live in an apartment and do not have a yard. I would spend hours (and I mean "hours" - 3 maybe) at a time trying to get her potty outside on the grass and she wouldn't do it. I watched her so I knew she needs to go but the minute we went out she forget all about her natural calls. And the minute we came back in, she goes. That was not good but at least she did it in the box. As you can see, I couldn't get her to go outside within a reasonable time frame. After several trails, I gave up on the idea. I don't have that much time standing outside and waiting for her to go. If she doesn't go when we are outside, I don't take her for her walks. So it's not like she was having fun but she didn't seems to care. That said, I think digging might very well be the cause and I am so glad for your help. I wouldn't be able to figure this one out myself. Thanks again. Any tip on how to get her go outside? Instead of holding it, she used to pee in her carrier and/or her crate if I had her confined (for house training propose). Of course I let her out every so often to go potty and if she won't I put her back in and try again in about 5 minutes. Still she won't go while she is outside but then eventually went in her crate. Now I leave her in the playpen with her litter box and a few toys if I can’t watch her. And I am back to the pooping playing game. Am I missing something here? Maybe my outside potty training technique needs some improvement. Help, please!!

| i have the same problem with my pup. he'll go on the potty pad but not outside. we can be outside for HOURS and he'll hold it until we get back indoors and head for the potty pad. he's also starting to play with and eating his poop too. When I catch him in the act, i give him a firm NO and put him in the crate while I clean up the mess. i'm starting to give him deter so he wont eat his poop. i started by giving him 1/2 a pill per day but 3 days have passed and he's still munching on his poop. so i'm going with a full pill from now on. whenever he makes a mess, rather than giving him a full bath, i put on a pair of rubber gloves and use baby wipes to wipe him all over until the baby wipes is no longer stained. then wipe again with a damp paper towel, then again with a dry paper towel. it's a PITA but i think it saves his skin from exccessive bathing at least. i'd love to hear what worked for you when you've solved the poopy eating, not going outside, habits! |

Great news! Our baby finally stop the poopy eating. We took the playpan off as she get really good at going in the litterbox. Ever since she has full run of the house, she stop the bad habit. I guess mainly because she wants to stay close to us as much as possible. She would go potty on her own and came right back to us. Staying away from the litter box does help I guess. I do clean it up as soon as I notice the box was soiled. That work out pretty well and she is now potty trained. She still won't go outside though - no matter how long we stay out there. However, as long as she is potty trained, that's good enough for us. Whenever we were visiting friends, I will put down newspaper in an area and show it to her. She would go on the paper when she needs to or when I told her to (on commend). Using newspaper instead of dog litter in the litter box turn out to be a great idea. Once again, big thanks to everybody here for all the help.
