| pads to outside question? Jed is 8 months old and does WONDERFUL going potty on his piddle pads. We never have accidents. I am wanting to start taking him outside for his "business" though. I still want him to have the pads for whenever we are out of the house but would like to start training him for outside when we are home. I know I had read up on this when I first got him but can't seem to find it now. The crate training won't do for us. I can't stand that, sorry. Any suggestions or help where to find this? |

| If you arent going to use a crate,it is kind of like pottie training a people puppy. Set a timer for 30min,when it goes off, take him to the door say (lets go out!),as he walks around the yard say (go sniff) or whatever command works for you. If he pees or poos, praise,do a happy dance and dont forget the treat. Repeat process. After a while you will be able to stretch it to an hour, then two. Each dog progresses differently. As he get older he will maybe be able to make it to three hours. If I am home,I try to make sure that Mina goes out every hour and a half, she is 6 months old. Others may have a better meathod, but this has always worked here. She is one of 6 dogs,so going out is alot of fun. Hope this helps. |

| I agree with My Lil friend, I have 4 and they will potty outside when I take them but they also have potty pads. My girls don't like outside.

| I would suggest taking him outside lots and then if he happens to pee or poop out there have treats ready and praise him. While he's going, and after, say something like "good pee pee", so that he will eventually link these words with the deed. My sister in law has her dog peeing on command. |

| With my previous Yorkie, I used the potty pads inside. When I was ready to start with the outside, I took one of the pee pads outside, I would use the "go potty" command, snap my fingers and use praise when she went on the pad outside. Eventually I took her outside without the pad and used the command and snapped my fingers and she would go. I was sure to give her lots of praise. It worked out great. I still had some potty pads down for her just in case when I was at work or not home. When we went to a friends house, I would put the potty pad down by the back door, snap my fingers and say "go pee pee" and she would go. Then she knew where the pad was if she had to go again. My friends thought it was a "great trick" with the pads. |

| All I have to do is put a pup pad outside and he gets the idea, he knows he can go there. I have a patio, so I still put pup pads there:it's cleaner for me this way.

| I started with potty pads and then began taking him out frequently throughout the day. I would also keep an eye on him to see when he would go over to the pad and quickly get him outside. When he was going outside pretty consistently I removed the pad since it was too convenient for him to go there when he was feeling lazy. I put the pad in the basement for him to use when the weather was bad or if we left home for a long time. Now he does a kitchen dining room walk to let us know he has to go or will whine at the door. He occasionally will go downstairs on the pad if he can't get our attention or if it is an emergency. I cannot ask for more. This is exactly how we wanted him trained. BTW I tried the potty bell but he was afraid of it. He is now 1 1/2 years old.
