| I am working on it except Ella is afraid of all the bells I have tried so far. I am now using plastic cat balls with bells in them tied together and she is getting somewhat used to them. I shake the bell every time we go out and eventually I will have her shake it and hopefully with repetition she will get it.

| Walmart sells a nylon strap with 3 bells attached to it. I bought a couple and they work great. Loud enough for me to hear, but they didn't scare the dogs like other bells. The trickiest part is, when the puppy does start ringing the bell on his own, he will start out by just barely tapping it. You have to watch closely for it, and reward him immediately by taking him out. This is how I ended up running outside barefoot in the snow a few times! |

| I had the pet door chime and Moses never got the hang of it. Right now he barks when he needs to go out. Sometimes he bites and won't settle down when he needs to go. So we ask "do you need to go potty? Tell me". And he barks. But I might try the hanging bells because I would like him to ring the bell when he needs to potty.

| I had one poodle that would scratch at the back door when he needed out,you had to really listen for it. One of the other poodles LEANS on the back door when he wants out. It is fine with me if somebody,ANYBODY barks at the door to go out. I cruise by the back door every 30 or so minutes to make sure that noone is just sitting there. |

| Bella always rings the bells when she wants to go out. Calvin never does but he doesnt have to because Bella does. People cant believe it when they come over and they see her ring the bells to go out. |

| Roxie is trained to use the bell. We started out ringing the bells (I made my own with small bells and a leather lace) every time that we went out...then eventually I tied a treat to the end of the bells when she wasn't looking. Later, when she ate it and rang the bells, we would go out immediately. She got the idea fairly quickly that when she rang the bells we would go outside. Now she rings the bells sometimes to just go out, but having an accident inside only happens once in a blue moon and it is usually my fault for not hearing or answering the bell fast enough. |

| Ok bells are in place and he thinks they are a toy. I think he is part cat! I'm having to really watch him and when I know he really wants out then I have him tap the bell and I immediately let him out. I'll keep trying this to see how it plays out. Wish me luck.

| My Chihuahua, Whiskey, uses this method. He actually got the hang of it in about a week. We were at Pet Supplies looking at the "designer" bell things, and the lady actually told us it was stupid to spend $15 on something that you could make at home. So we did just that. My mom bought a bell and tied it to a piece of ribbon and hung it, dog level, by the back door. At first when he needed to go outside (before learning the bell) we would say "Ring the bell go outside," and we'd ring the bell and then open the door. Within an hour or so he would ring the bell, get a treat, then go outside. I think that it works way better then having to watch them all the time. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Wylie and I are working with Ann. It is really difficult but we are making progress. Yesterday, when she fell out of bed, she knocked over the bell and it rang multiple times - I saw the excitement in her eyes, It is a start....
