Embarassed Stay in the yard

Does anyone have a trick for training their pup to stay in the yard? Moses barks at everyone he sees while he is out in the yard. He will take off after the neighbors when they are outside...and tonight a neighbor rode his moped scooter up into our cul de sac. The next thing I know, Moses is chasing him down the street, barking his brains out. Moses already knows how to speak, but we haven't mastered the stop barking command. He is almost 7 months and we need to figure this out now so he learns some manners!

For the safety of your pup, he should not be outside without some means to contain him in the yard -- a fence or a leash.

Training to stay within your property boundaries or to respond to recall would take lots of time and effort (the latter should be worked on by every dog owner for safety reasons). However, no matter how well trained, there will probably be that one time that training fails and your pup will run free. Yorkies are too small and vulnerable to risk having them run into the street or far from home.

Confused

Our neighborhood is all open, and no one has fences. We are on a 1/2 acre lot. I hate to have him on a chain when we are outside, but we might have to just to keep him in the yard. Luckily we live at the top of our cul de sac and get very little traffic because of the dead end street. I might need to take him to obedience training since his selective hearing has manifested itself! Little turd is sleeping on my bed right now, all snuggly and innocent...oblivious to the heart attack he gave me!

My last home was in a deed restricted subdivision and had all kinds of rules, one being no fences. So, loving the cottage garden look, I got sneaky and put up a short fence big enough for a pup play area & masked it with tall flowering shrubs and planted tons of lupines, hollyhocks, cosmos, bachelor buttons, daisies, etc.

No matter how quiet the neighborhood, all it takes is one car. Or, your pup could see something interesting and decide to chase it and run far from home.

My boys were trained to stay when I opened the door to the outside. One day my father opened the door and Teddy went shooting out to chase the UPS truck down the street. We were fortunate and I was able to call him to me and he obeyed. However, there are many stories here of less fortunate people.

Be careful if you use any type of tie up outdoors. Always use a harness and supervise closely. It is very easy for these guys to get the tie (chain or otherwise) wrapped around a fragile leg or neck. Never leave him unattended because he would vulnerable to loose dogs, predatory birds (my neighbor's Yorkie was attacked by a hawk last week and is lucky to be alive).

Sorry for all the scare stories, but the fact is little dogs are vulnerable.

Wanted to add that the Yorkie attacked and severely injured by a hawk weighs 13 pounds. He is not tiny.

That sounds like the perfect solution, but i would staill stay out there with them.
We don't have hawks here, and if we did, they would struggle to pick up my little teapot, but i never leave my dogs out in the garden on their own for more than a couple of minutes.
We have a 5 foot fence, but i'm always worried someone might jump over it and steal the dogs!
There are some very sad stories on here about dogs that have gone missing from fenced yards/gardens...i wouldnt risk it.

A dog, especially a young terrier, is not going to be automatically trained to stay around with you off leash. Most 7 month old dogs no matter what the breed would not be ready to have full off leash privileges.

Jackson is what I consider to be a pretty well trained dogs. He's got 40-50 tricks up his sleeve, we have a pretty tight bond, we spend a lot of time together, and spend time training almost every night... however, as much as he loves me, a squirrel or a rabbit is MUCH more exciting to him than me or even a piece of juicy steak.

I am not saying to never let a dog off leash. I used to do it with Jackson and probably still will in the future in SAFE areas with NO roads nearby. I do recall practice a few times a week with him... I bought a 50 foot light rope lead from Petsmart. I let him drag it around most of the time because it will be easy for me to step on it or catch him if need be. I carry his "JACKPOT" treats in my pocket, cheese or chicken. Every so often I call him to me, if he does not obey, he gets a *slight* tug on the leash to remind him. I say "Jackson here" and he 98% of the time obeys now. But it took a lot of work and practice and we still are not fully there.

He's trustworthy enough that when I go to my cousins baseball games, I am able to drop his leash and he lays down and stays put watching the game patiently. When I visit my dads house, I can open my car door and he runs out straight into my dads house or backyard. I can open doors and he won't dart, etc. But a few weeks ago, he discovered a hole in my grandma's fence, saw a rabbit, and booked it. Thankfully I got him back and there was no main roads nearby, but no matter how well trained a dog is, there is ALWAYS a chance (might I add: especially with a terrier).

Even the best trained dog can run off if something is more interesting then listening- you never know what is going to fit that criteria until it happens. If I am in a yard without a fence I will hook my dog to a long line- giving them plenty of room to explore and play while still being restricted to the property- they are only allowed to run "off leash" in fenced in areas.

I am in agreement with everyone here. No dog should be outside untethered. If you spend alot of time outside, perhaps you could take an expen outside with you. He would get to move around and see things, but would not be able to chase anything. If he is 7months old then he is still just a kid and kids dont always obey.

You should have them harnessed and on a line when in your yard...not to mention you definitely need to be outside with him for safety reasons. Just having him on a leash wont protect him from a large unleashed dog, or an aggressive cat, or a bird of prey. Even well trained dogs will chase squirrels and the paperboy, so for his own good keep him leashed if you cant put up a fence.

This sounds so cute and homey! Makes me we we had a larger yard do this this. We are fenced in the back and whenever they are with me in the front, they are tethered! That way they can still play "shadow" to me as I do whatever I am doing hands free

Hawks don't have to pick up their target to do damage or kill.

My neighbor's male Yorkie weighs 13 pounds. The hawk obviously could not pick him up, but the hawk tore open the side of his torso. The hawk's talons came very close to ripping the diaphragm, which would likely have been deadly.
