Default POTTY training both inside and out????

Looking for advice from anyone who has trained their yorkie to go potty inside on pad and outside in yard. My 12 week old baby is doing well going outside. She will pee every time I take her out, and now I know her Poop time and I will take her outside for that as well. My question is.... I have her in a Ex pen at night and during the day for the time I need to get things done. I line the pen with two large pee pads and she just goes everywhere. I have not worked with her using the pee pads inside the house, because I wanted her to be able to go outside first. I only want her to use the pee pads inside in an emergency. haha
I just don't know how to go about getting her to only potty on the pad inside. I only have her outside of the pen when I am there to play with her and know that she just peed outside. Do I just put a pad on the carpet and keep putting her on it? or do I only put one in the pen (and not cover the entire floor) and reward her in there first? I want to try and eliminate her going all over my carpet while learning. I understand there will be accidents, but want to try and avoid them if possible. Thank you so very much!!!

All 3 of my babies are outside trained...and when they do have an accident its right at the back door they go out to go potty...so when I do have to go out I leave a potty pad down at the back door for them...but I have all wood floors so its no big deal to clean.

I was always told...that I needed to train either outside potty or potty pad training inside, cause trying to train both would just confuse them...and make them think, its ok to potty inside anywhere and outside...made sence to me...But since I have been on YT...I have read that people have trained there babies to do both with a lot of work and consistency...If I was you and you wanna train both...I would get a play yard...the play yards have a floor in them, so if they do have an accident or they miss the potty pad its not on you carpet or floor and it has a zip up top so they can't jump or climb out....Good luck

I'm sure someone will come along and help you with both trainings.

Thank you for your response. I agree with not confusing her, that is why I wanted to train her outside first. When you were training your pups to go outside, did you let them be free in the inside? I maybe am not giving her enough freedom to let me know she needs to go outside. I just take her out (ring the potty bell) that she ignores and then bring her back in to play. But, I do not let her run around the house. She only is kept downstairs in the living room. Well, now she is running crazy up stairs and I kept bringing her back down. I think I need to allow her to roam around downstairs more. She is happy in her pen, but I do not think she is spending enough time outside of the pen free. I think she is getting mad.... Her pen is 6' long, so she has plenty of room and is happy in there. I just don't think she gets the potty thing. I reward her when she pees outside and she just isn't that impressed. lol
I think I my put her leash on inside and let her hang with me. Any suggestions?

I am on the fifth floor of a building right in the middle of the city.... I take Riley outside and he goes outside, but if he Needs to go while I am not here or in the middle of the night.... or just in between going outside, he will use the peepee pads.......and I can put one down in the corner if I go over someone's house and he will use it.

I bought both sizes of the purina second nature doggie litter box and just put the peepee pads in it.... I also got a Diaper Genie for the used ones.

I am very fortunate... from the day I brought him home, I would just walk him over and put him in it and tell him to go potty……..when he would go I would make a Huuuuuuuuuuge deal of it…. Like my neighbors probably though I was crazy, if they heard me. He picked it up, Immediately. He only had a few accidents…. The vet told me their bladders are not fully formed until 16-weeks….so they are going to have accidents…..they just can not help, so she said he was doing that, because he was so Smart.

I have this xpen and I had his bed/play area on one side and the smaller litter box on the other side…. I would take him out of his pen and immediately outside, or immediately to the bigger litter box.

I trained Riley to go on the pads, first, and then when we would go outside, I would just tell him, Go Potty.... He would go and then look up to me for his treat.

He has had full run of the bedroom since Monday.... so I put the larger litter box in the corner....
I still have his xpen set up in case he wants to go in it..... but he's been hanging up on bed in front of the fan with his snuggle puppy.

I think I am going to tear down the xpen tonight and set up his crate, and put one of his beds or a blanket in it.... but keep the door to it open... just in case he wants a more den type of a place to lay....

My Brandy goes poddy on command outside as well as on a her poddy patch, which makes it so much easier. When she was a puppy I had a 6 ft leash attached to her and me. Wherever I went she did to, so no chance of her hiding to go pee in the house. I took her outside every half hour to start. Everytime I took her out, I would say "Lets go Poddy" Every time she went I would clap my hands and very excitedly say "Good Poddy" or "Good Poo" I looked like an idiot making a huge deal about it, but trust me, it worked. First thing in the morning, when I knew she had to go, I would take her and set her on the poddy patch and say "Lets go poddy" and I would not let her off until she did, then did the clapping and excited good poddy. I live on a 4th floor condo now and the poddy patch is outside on my deck. This is where she goes all the time. She is a year and a half and will go to the door when she needs to pee or poo. Whenever I have to leave her alone, right before I leave all I have to do is say lets go poddy, take her to the patch and she goes every time, right away. Same thing when we are outside. No waiting around, I say it, she goes.

Good for little Riley! I wanted to train Winnie outside first. But, I think where I messed up is that she loves being outside and will play and just hang out. So, there is NEVER a time that she pees and wants to go back in. She walks or runs around...pees without thinking and continues to play. I do reward her, but it is not like she cares!

She will eventually pick it up.... just remember it takes a lot of work....patience and consistency with whatever method you decide to do.

Riley just turned 1-year and I just recently started to do the crazy praising thing, again..... he started getting Lazy and decided he didn't want to get into the litter box. He would stand right outside of it and lift his leg and shoot the peepee Into The Box... and it would go inbetween the pad and the box.....
or sometimes he would do that from the side of the box that was a little higher and it would hit the side and bounce onto the floor right outside of it.... of course he only did that when i wasn't looking....... but i caught him a couple times..... and since then it hasn't happened........ Nooo Doubt!!
My parents have a really BIG square peepee pad holder that they aren't using. I may switch over to that instead of the box... and see if he makes it on it everytime. LOL!!

I Loooooooooooooooove the litter box.
I had a Schipperke for 13-years who was only outdoor trained.... I had to carry him in and out for the last 8 months or so..... He was 22 pounds....
I felt sooooo bad for him when he started getting older...
and slower.... I would put pads down in case he needed to use them while I was gone or at work....and he would Never use them.
It Never even dawned on me to peepee pad train... 14-years ago.
Several of my neighbors with small dogs were doing the pad thing and I decided at that time, that my next pup would be trained to do either.

When I was potty training my pups, I kept them confined in there play yard...and would take them out just about every hour...as I was taking them out of the play yard I would say "lets go outside to potty" once we were outside I said "go potty" for pee and if I knew it was time to poop I would than start saying "hurry up"...I never let my pups play outside at all while I was potty training them...I let them do there business and it was right back into the house...at that time I didn't want them to think outside was play time...IF they did their business outside, we came back into the house than I let them play for awhile and before putting them back in there play yard for their nap I took them back out to potty again and always took them out to potty after every meal.

Bella is almost 3 yrs old fully house trained now, she wil NOT potty in the house. Harley and Ivy are 9 mos old, they have full run of the house now. They are doing great with there potty training...I let them out every 2 to 3 hours...I've only had Ivy for 4 weeks now and she had 1 accident this morning at the back door while waitting for her Daddy to let her out...he decided to make him a cup of coffee before letting them out and poor Ivy just couldn't hold it anymore...so that was DH's fault for not letting them out first...LOL
