need opinions on a using a large crate with pee pad I know you are suppose to use the crate as a training tool so they don't pee in their crate. However, a few breeders told me to get a crate large enough for a bed and a pee pad. Then when he got older and could potentially hold it all night, i could use a divider to make the crate smaller to eliminate the pee pad. thoughts?

I have an almost 13 week old Yorkie who is in a crate eveynight. Max has never soiled his crate. In the morning he zips out of his crate to his piddle pad which we keep in his office (confined area). So, I know he can hold it for at least seven hours. Why does your breeder suggest a larger crate with a piddle pad inside?

The breeder where I got Kiki had the same set up. She had a large crate with a sleeping area and a pee pad also. This was so that the mother and the pups could all fit in the crate. I have a large crate here because the last dog I had was a Rott. Kiki is doing fine with it. He never soils the crate. I am also consistent with taking him outside to potty. As soon as I get home he runs straight to the door to go outside. Ladyt & Kiki

why a large crate? to have flexibility to not get up in the middle of the night or if we were out longer than expected.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali has been in a large dog playpen since i got her at 9 weeks. At one end is her mat and bed and the other is her wee wee pad. The playpen has a door on the one end that I leave open during the day. She has always gone on her wee wee pad and during the day just hops in there and uses it. She does have a pad in the other end of the house which she uses also. It has worked very well for me as she was too little to go all night. Just this last week I have put her in my bed at night ans she will hop down on the stairs I have by the side of my bed and go in her crate and do her business and run back up to sleep. So my experience has been very positive. I do not expect to train her to go outside until spring and will aways have a pad down for her. You can PM me if you have any questions. |

Ok, I have like a vanity area in my room which I am in like 24/7 lol. I have a baby gate blocking Muffin from my room. In the gate is bed, food and weepads on other half. Well I cant afford to cover whole floor with the pads, which is what I had been doing cause he will still go on carpeting thats showing. Sooo......today I made his gated area smaller. I am guessing that it is 2ft by 1/2ft. Enough room for his bed, blanket and toys in corner. Then I have his small crate in other corner with weepad in it. His food is across from crate, leaving very little carpet to pee on, because he would either pee by his food or by his bed. So his only option is to go in his crate, which he wouldnt do before! Been several hours and he has peed and pooped in the crate! Just thought I would share this idea or give you another. Good luck! MuffinsMom

We have an area in our kitchen that I used one of those puppy fence things and just fenced off a small area. It's her "home". In it we have her food, water, kennel, a couple toys and her piddle pad. If we aren't home, sleeping or just too busy to watch her, she's put in her little area. The kennel door is always left open, so if she needs to go, she can just walk out, use the pad and go back to bed! It's working out quite well so far.... Eventually I'll train her to go outside. But she's only 2 pounds right now, and I'm sure she'd get sick or something being outside during our freezing cold Wisconsin winters.
