Animal Smiley 036 Pad or outside?

Hello everyone!
I am so thankful to have found YT! I've learned so much here and bought things on the recommendations of what I've found in the forums. Everyone is so knowledgeable and friendly.

My question is...which do you prefer, pee pads or outdoor training. I've always had big dogs (labs, border collie, standard poodle, etc) and trained them to do their business outside. Now I have this tiny ball of fur and am not sure quite what to do. Most of the time we go outside (we live in the far suburbs and have 2 acres and are surrounded by 40+ acres of farm land). Lately the weather in the northeast has been cool and rainy. Today has been especially bad with wind and rain (and threats of tornadoes). Teddy loves to go outside to do his business (most days we go without an accident and he'll even ring his bells here and there), but today has been a disaster. I can't blame poor Teddy since I hate going out in the weather also and there have been several accidents.

I'm wondering which everyone thinks is the best way to potty train a small dog. In the winter it gets quite cold and we get some bad snow storms. Not sure how Teddy will like that. My husband thinks it's gross for a dog to do his business inside (our cats certainly do! ), but I don't see him going out at 11pm and 6am to take the puppy out. I really have no problem taking him out, but I want to do what is best for him.

I work from home and have twin 12 year old boys. On busy days when I have to leave Teddy for a few hours he is in a pen with his bed, bowls, toys and pads. He always does his business on the pads when he is penned up, but if he's out he won't go back in if he has to go. His mistakes are my own for not being diligent, but I'd like to figure out the best way to train him.

(BTW...Teddy is 12 weeks old. At his age I am just amazed at how well he is doing. I sure didn't expect much, but he surprises me!)
Thank you so much for your help!
Tracy

Hi and Welcome to YT!

You will get a ton of different opinions on this thread.

I feel you need to do what is best for you and your household. Personally, I like having the pads, I have to work so I like knowing my dogs don't have to hold it for 8 hours or more. That is the main reason I went with pads. But growing up with small dogs, there were always problems when it rained, even the best trained ones would simply refuse to go for entire days when the weather was bad. I like that in really bad weather, downpours, freezing temps, etc. we don't have to go out and deal with that. There are many people who do outdoor and pad training, so that the dog goes out most of the time but in an emergency they have the pad.

I prefer to use peepads. So many factors, my unpredictable work hours, Michigan winters, convenience of mid-night potty breaks, etc.

I also like that because she is used to going on her pads, I can take her (and a pad) anywhere with me & she's fine. I've put a pad down in the trunk of my car, my friends bathroom, my kids dorm room and no matter where it is ZoE knows to go on it. It makes traveling with her very easy, which is good, cos I don't like leaving her home alone if I don't have to.

Congratulations on your new puppy. Yorkies are exceptionally smart, so I'm sure Teddy will continue to amaze you in the coming weeks

We do both. Levi is primarily outdoor-trained. If I am home with him, he holds it perfectly and does not even move toward his pad. I prefer for him to be outdoor trained for several reasons: consistently getting fresh air, less waste (we use disposable pads), easier when I leave him with my parents that don't love changing pee pads. But I do love for him to at least know the purpose of pads, because I don't expect it to hold it when I am not at home to take it out - and thankfully, he has learned to use the pad when I'm gone. The combination training has worked out very well for us.

Louie goes outside to potty. When we first got him he came pee pad trained but only in his x-pen. I noticed he would pee on the rugs, like he thought that was a pee pad., so I quit using the pee pads cause I think it confused him. Their are times I wished he was pee pad trained so I would not have to rush home, He is able to hold it for 51/2 hours, that is the longest he was ever left home alone, usually my daughter will be home from school to let him out or the dh.

I have always had big dogs also so I know where you are coming from. They were always taught to go outdoors. I have also always crate trained while potty training them to speed it along. But since Riley is a small breed and I was told by his breeder and my vet not to take him out for a walk or anything like that until shots are completed about 16 weeks I have been nervous to do so. We got an xpen for when he has to be alone so I could give him room to play, eat, and potty but I stay at home so unless I am running to walmart or something then it won't be often. then rest of the time I have him in the same room as me with the doorways blocked with baby gates. I would attach him to me with a lead like I did the big boys but decided he was to small for that and I just watch him like a hawk and use the xpen when I am cooking or whatever. We have all hardwood floors so I don't have to worry about carpet and I pulled up all my throw rugs. He has already went on the paper himself several times .

For now, though we just got him home recently I am doing strictly indoors on newspaper. I personally don't do the pee pads. Of course I used cloth diapers with my kids since I am a bit of a geek/new age hippie lol and don't buy much in plastic. I would have went with the washable pee pads but was scared he would use my rugs or if a shirt was on the floor. I know those here have had luck with it but I am new to indoor training so that is what I thought.

I am planning on doing the newspaper exclusively until he is well past his shots and ready for walks. Then making a big deal out of going outside and hopefully he will prefer it on his own but still have the inside as a backup but if it isn't possible his poop will never be that big so I think I can live with the indoor on a perm basis.

I just bought one of those holders people get for peepads and use the newspaper on it instead so he can't rip them up and so it will stay in place.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Marley goes outside. I've tried numerous times to potty pad train her but she prefers to go outside!

Default Thank you!

Thank you all for your insight. The big dogs were easy to train outside (I volunteer for a charity that raises service dogs, that's why we've had so many 'big' dogs), but this itty bitty little guy is a tough call. The heavy rain and wind yesterday was not helpful in taking him out. He would hold it and wait until later and go on the rug...next to his pee pads. He's even quickly mastered the bells, but he rings them when he wants to go out to play. We are working on that part. Little stinker. Think I will continue to take him outside, but will keep the pee pads in place and hope he gets the hang of them for bad weather. Would an attractant spray help?

Thanks again!

Ziva is trained to go outside but I always keep a tray with newspaper in the garage for rainy days, night time (I'm scared of raccoons, rats, opossum, alligators and other "natural" florida wildlife!) and cold weather- Ziva uses both as she sees fit. (she is almost two and it took until she was one year to get to this arrangement)

Outside! Remy is 100% outside (at 2.5) after using pads for his first 6 months. (His choice BTW, he stopped using the pads when he understood he was going out to go).

We live in a condo in Baltimore, which makes it a little bit challenging... out our foyer, down the elevator, and outside... its not as easy as just opening the door. That being said, he has a covered area to go in bad weather.

I noted your comments above - and the issue with bad weather - Remy stays with my parents in the country when we travel and during blizzards and driving rain he goes very close to the house on the shrubbery and will poop in the garage, LOL. and he is extremely quick about it from what I've been told.

Angel Pads or outside

Hi I am Sandy and am bran new to the world of Yorkies. I will post a cute picture as soon as Bella slow down enough for us to get one. We had two small dogs but where much bigger than Bella so they went outside. We are trying to train her to use the pads. She was doing great going 4 out of 5 times on them and now has decided maybe once or twice a day is good. This breed seems to be very stubborn about this and she definately has a mind of her own on many issues. She knows she is suppose to go on them because if she goes somewhere she is not suppose to she kind of skulks around the house almost wanting me to find her mistake.

Have other people had problems with this pee pee on the wee wee pads training?

Our Yorkie is 13 weeks old and we thought we got her from a reputable person is Mass but she is sick with two different worms and is coughing terribly because of these worms. When we got her she had bloody diarehea and her rear quarters were covered with it all dried up all over her. My husband surprised me with her when I came home from a trip to Florida and the next day we were at the vet with her. She also had something respiratory going on. Now she still has the diarehea and a terrible cough that the vet said she is literally trying to cough the worms up. We got all this for 1200.00. The never gave us any info on this breed of dog or her micro chip nothing. Not a very good place they want their money and to get the dog out.

I will be back and thanks for listening Bella is our new love can't wait until she is trained and don't have to worry about her going in my house and everyone elses

Potty pads are great!!! When outside, he goes potty too. But the potty pads really help during bad weather.

I would LOVE to have my Priscilla do both pad AND doggie door! However......I am so darn glad to have the little darling not using the carpets....I could spit! She was inconsistent for months and months while trying to force her to use the pads. I admit that I was just as frustrated as my DH. I am very prissy about indoor accidents, I'm sorry. I also baby my Priscilla like it's my job. So my husband built a short tunnel from the doggie door into a covered playpen. I can zip a top on the pen and also zip the door closed on the other side that goes out into the yard (for rainy or cold days). She will use the grass inside the pen and then quicky come back inside the house without getting her feet wet. (she hates to get rained on). This way she can come and go whenever she pleases, even when I'm not home (which is rare). Another one of my numerous phobias is the fact that I don't ever want her to be free in the back yard when we are not home.
When the weather is nice and we are home.....top off, free run of yard. So easy to clean those tiny toosie rolls that were deposited in the pen.
I never dreamed in a million years I would be this crazy about a little dog but indeed....I have ultimately become my Mother!

I use both, got Minnie when she was a pup during the winter and refused to take her out since it was too cold in Missouri. She now goes on walks and has never been leash trained. She is using a harness.
