| Warming up to the house Hello! Harley is about 7 months now and he is the best dog i have ever had. Harley is the first inside dog my family has had and hearing about the myth that yorkies are hard to potty train has become a personal challenge for me. Durring the day, when we cant watch Harley, he is confined to an area in the kitchen(so he doesnt feel like he's being punished by being alone) that is about 3 feet wide, and 6 feet long. in the confined area we have a peepee pad and he only uses that from time to time. i give him a treat EVERY time he goes peepee or poopoo outside. he is pretty consistent about going outside but does sometimes use the pad. I do gradually want to get rid of him using the pad entirely. I live in Southeren California so winter cold in not a major factor in potty training. im also 17 so any help would be greatly aprecitated, thanks! here are my question 1.Can anyone give me advice on introducing Harley to the house? i dont want him to be constrained to his confined area forever. 2. any tips or tricks you guys have for potty training a yorkie? Thanks again!!! |

| I'd take away the pad. I think it's just going to confuse him more and if you want him all outdoor trained eventually, I'd just get rid of it now. Jackson had free roam at about 5 1/2 months old (except the upstairs was blocked off but the downstairs is big). I was really consistent and strict with him for the first 5-6 weeks of having him. I did do crate training in the beginning but he never spent a lot of time in it because I was lucky to be home alone when I first got him. So I'd bring him outside first thing in the morning and if he did not go pee/poop, he'd go back in the crate for 10ish more minutes. Then we'd try again. After he went pee AND poop, we'd have our playtime in the morning in a small confined area (like the kitchen) and he'd eat and play for 30 minutes. I'd always take him out 10 minutes after eating/drinking as a pup. Basically, I did not set him up to fail. I'd take him outside even if I didn't think he had to go so that he did not have a chance to have an accident. This went on throughout the day and if I was not home, he'd stay in the crate. I think it's all about consistency and patience

Total Off topic - Brit - saw your avatar. I have the same life jacket for Remy but when I put it on him he "tips" forward and his head gets submerged in the water and it promotes drowning (joking of course). But I had to take it off him. It seems like it changes his balance some how, and makes him front-heavy. I don't get it. Its a size small (I tried the XSM and it was too tight) so I think its the right size. Jackson looks like he uses it properly. Am I the idiot, or is Remy a poor swimmer?? | |
