| Little Willie hates grooming We have an adorable little 2 lb guy, his name is Willie and is 6 months old. He plays ball and gets along well with family and our other dogs. Willie has a problem though, He does not like to be groomed. Nails, brushing, trimming his hair....forget it. He squirms around so much that I am afraid he is going to get hurt while trying. Please help, our other dogs that we have had since puppys love to be cared after but not Willie |

| My Ben squirms like a worm when I try to groom him. He is very uncooperative. But the professional groomer that I take him to now has no problem with him. I don't know what it is but she says he is a little gentleman. I think he knows he can get by with it with me. If he is too much trouble, I wind up stopping and trying another day. So, maybe I have given him the idea that if he acts up, it will get him out of the ordeal. I don't mind taking him to the groomer's as she is MUCH better at it than I am but I would like him to be a bit more cooperative when I need to do the in-between chores.

| Treats, praise positive reinforcement do it and don't stop just reward and go...it takes time. Also exercise the heck out of him before attempting grooming if he's tired he'll be a little easier to deal with. I did 5-15 minute sessions daily... I have to soft muzzle Scoobers for the nail, ear and anal grooming still...but he does fine for me at home now...he literally saw a brush the first time and ran away, shook, pottied and displayed serious fear aggression I was like what the cream cheese is all this...? He wouldn't bath either had to get a shower head extender-standing water freaks him out too. You might need to be more specific to get more in depth help...just he just wiggle or bite at certain things, is it fear or energy? Do you use nail nippers/clippers, or a pedi paw...ever try daily small sessions of just filing with an emery board? What are you doing to ears? Are you just brushing-what type of brush I just got the Madan brushes in sensitive for my dogs as I found most pin brushes to be rough-theses are super gentle. toplinepet.com Talk to Mimimomo on here she sells them. Double check all supplies you use...are they comfortable, gentle, irritating, they hurt? I also swear by the use of Dogswell's Mello Mut chicken jerky...many people use rescue remedy...both are homeopathic. Boiled chicken and Zuke's Mini Naturals are used here for grooming because I can give so many of them without fear of over feeding treats too large or fattening. None of my dogs love the buzzers for clipping...so we're still working on it...but they all tolerate it and I've learned to be fast, before that I had a groomer do it. Be sure it's not pulling -could just be the noise though.

| Chuck hated grooming as well… But with constant positive reinforcement it gets better in time. I massage him before grooming so he’ll be in a calm state of mind and if he keeps calm I praise him, give him treats… He soon got the trick: keep calm and get a treat

| Yes, just stay very relaxed and calm yourself first and foremost, go to a quiet mental state, try to talk to the little one as little as possible when he is in this unstable state and just let your hands and eyes and calm demeanor all work together to tell your baby that "this is no big deal, I will go carefully, never hurt you and you are in excellent hands". Once I relaxed and quit jibbering "it's ok, it's ok, it's ok" to Tibbe and just completed the task in an easy, relaxed, matter-of-fact manner, he began to learn to trust me, just relax and go with the flow. With Tibbe, just stopping my talking and letting my own quiet demeanor and hands do all the calming work of reassurance was the ticket - kind of how momma dogs reassure their babies - with their quiet calm demeanor and touch. Don't get me wrong - at first I was tight as a bowstring all over, nervous, hated making him have to go through bathing and a wreck - but I learned that to help him, I would have to first get myself under control. Tibbe was very wild when I first got him and had never been socialized. He fought everything I tried to do to or with him at first in the way of any grooming, especially the bathing part. He acted as if I were trying to drown him - he fought me. And now he just stands quietly in the sink as I bathe him, leaning into my hands as I wash him, only moving if some water should run over his nose. When I ask him if he wants "a bath" now, he starts to dance and puts his paws up on the counter doors. We turned a total fight for survival into a truly relaxing experience. I even get relaxed just thinking of bathing him. Do not know if this technique will work for you but it changed bathtime around here. |
