| Please help! Our potty trained male yorkie is suddenly peeing EVERYWHERE! Hi everyone, We have an 8 month old male yorkie, Denny, who we are absolutely crazy about. He has been a wonderful addition to our family. Denny sleeps in a crate next to our bed at night, and he stays in his crate during the day while we work. We take him outside immediately when he wakes up and when we get home from work. While we are home evenings and weekends, Denny rings a bell and barks to be let out, usually every 1 1/2 hours or so. We had a wonderful routine going and felt so blessed that he caught on so well to the potty training routine. However, just within the last week or so, he has been having accidents all over the house: sometimes right after he was just outside! He has peed all over our couch, basement, blankets, stairs, even right in front of me on our hardwood kitchen floor without even attempting to let me know he needed to go outside. It is never in the same spot. He is also now lifting his leg; he has never done that before--always just squatted. We are so frustrated because he was doing so well and never had accidents; now it is a constant struggle, just within the last week. He is not neutered (yet) but we have been talking about getting him to the vet to look at our options. Will neutering help this problem? Is he marking his territory? Is he sensing females in the neighborhood? Neither my husband or I have ever had a yorkie before...any help/advice you can give us would be greatly appreciated! Thanks to everyone for helping! |

| First- I would have a urinalysis done- he could have a UTI. Otherwise, he is probably marking- neutering may reduce the behavior, it may not. Neutering before a dog starts marking is best, once they have learned the behavior, it doesn't always stop. But getting him neutered ASAP is your best bet.

| Yes. Neutering will stop the incessant need to mark but you'll have to use special urine scent remover to remove all of the scent and retrain. My dog was 9 mos. old when I got him and not neutered either but he wasn't a "marker" yet. After neutering, his potty training was completely successful and he's been totally clean in the house. He's 3 years old and I swear to you, that feisty little male MUCH prefers his scent outdoors and has NEVER marked in this house. I swore I wouldn't get a male due to the worry about this but my sister said her males never marked and if I crate trained him, he wouldn't mark either. She was right, at least so far and I've had him over 2 years. |

| While you are at work, would you consider giving Denny a small room or an xpen? I assume you work about 8 hours a day and sleep about 6. That would mean Denny is spending at least 14 hours a day in a crate. That is a lot of time for any dog to be crated.

| We tried the pen and it was too much space. There were multiple accidents everywhere. We were going to revisit the idea of a pen or a room when we KNEW for sure that we could leave him alone and there wouldn't be any accidents. Obviously, we are not to that point yet, hence the thread that I started here so I could get some advice (without judgement!). I have researched crate training and also read a lot about it on here....it sounds like many other people have our same routine. He gets a lot of walks and play time when we are home, and he will have the whole summer "off" as I am a teacher. |

No Longer a Member | A good pen set up will allow for a indoor potty option, thus lessening the possibility for accidents. Plus you can line the bottom of the ex-pen with a plastic tarp, or place it on a hard floor area. Usually, if you set up the pen right, they will have food/water, bed, toys, and then a pee-pad/ugo-dog/potty patch, etc. This would be much more comfortable for your pup, rather than having to wait 8+ hours to pee everyday. For the excessive urination, I'd check with the vet to ensure he doesn't have a UTI, and if that comes up negative a neuter would probably be best. |

| Boys and Girl Yorkies like to mark and thats about the age...You should have him neutered and stock up on plenty of Belly Bands. Sunnie and Mardelin make beautiful belly bands. And so does YHR....I have about 10 belly bands and keep them on at all times.....Not at bedtime....Good Luck to you... |

| Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will check into the belly bands and we are comparing prices for getting him neutered. As for the crate/pen issue that is now being discussed: Our vet specifically told us NOT to use potty pads, as that gets dogs confused. Example--We are teaching him that its NOT okay to go in the house, and then confusing him by teaching him to GO in the house. Make sense? This came directly from a couple of different vets and is the reason we have avoided purchasing potty pads. Opinions? Thanks again! |

| Thanks so much for the ideas everyone. I will look into the belly bands and we are also comparing prices to get our little guy neutered. As for the crate/pen conversation that has developed: When we first got Denny, two different vets told us to avoid buying potty pads because they said it confuses the dogs. (Example- We are teaching him it is NOT okay to potty in the house, but then confusing by encouraging him to actually GO in the house on a pad.) Because of that, we have avoided buying potty pads when he is in the pen. Opinions?? |

| He is "Marking" his territory...you have to teach him that its ok to mark outside but not inside...just like potty training, you might need to stay outside with him longer so he can get all his marking done and tell him what a good boy he is everytime he marks outside and if you catch him in the act in the house say no and take him outside...until that can be done...I would get belly bands and get him neutered asap...and you will need a good odor cleaner like Natures Miracle...you can get it from pet smart...and clean all the places he has marked really well with water and vinger than use the Natures Miracle on them...you have to get rid of the smell or he will do it again cause he can smell it....hope this helps, good luck.

| Thanks for the suggestion Maximo. I never thought of it like that. Like I said, we are new parents and really want to do what's best for our little guy, now and in the long term. My husband and I absolutely need to discuss the use of a pen further. I really appreciate your care and concern (and knowledge!). You are right, it's easy for a vet to say "not" to do something...but they are not the ones living through it in our home! Thanks again to everyone! |
