| Re-training a 3 year old? (Potty training regression) I know there's a ton of threads about potty training, but I've found that most (if not, all of them) are regarding puppies. In my case, I have a 3 year old (will be 4 this year) Yorkie who was potty trained and did very well with the pee pads. When he was about a year old, we used to be able to leave him at home in the office (which has hardwood floors!) with a pee pad and we would come home to no accidents. However, this past year or so, it was like having a new puppy to potty all over again from scratch! The tricky thing is, I know that he knows where he's supposed to go, but for some reason, he likes to be sneaky and pee/poo on the floor whenever someone's not looking. If someone is around to watch, he will always go on the pad properly, and he will even look at you as if to say "Hey look Mommy! I'm going good potty!" But the split second that there's no one around, he will randomly pee on the floor (even when he just peed on the pad 2 minutes earlier!). He's also started to randomly pee in the kitchen, which he NEVER did as a puppy. I've tried crate training him from scratch, but every time he proves to be successful and we give him more freedom, he just regresses again. At his age, I don't want him to have to spend his whole life in a crate and under a watchful eye 24/7. There have been times where I've taken him out of his crate to go potty....he does his business, I leave the room for 30 seconds, come back and there's pee on the floor I don't think his bladder is over active or anything of that sort. He can spend hours lying on my lap or playing without having to go potty. What's also difficult is that no one is ever able to catch him in the act. This makes it impossible to correct him when he goes in the wrong place. He ONLY does it when no one is watching. Even if someone has been watching him for hours, and then turns their back for 3 seconds, he will go pee on the floor When no one's home, we put him in the basement in an X-Pen lined with pee pads. Last week there was one small area that wasn't covered with the pads, and guess what? He peed right in that tiny uncovered area of the floor It was like he was purposely trying to avoid the pads! I mean, the pad to floor ratio was 10-1 and he managed to do his business right on the part of the floor that was peeking through the pads I don't know what to do at this point Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any advice/experiences would be much appreciated!

| I am going through the exact same thing with my 2 1/2 yr old. I actually came to the forums to see if I could find an answer and came across your post. Hoping someone reads it and replies with some answers. My yorkie, Bevo, has always been puppy pad trained. He never goes outside. But, here recently, he pees on my trash can, corners of my counters, etc!! And same with you, always when noone is looking! We treat him every time we see him go potty on his pee pee pad, which is sometimes 10 times in an hour if hes really looking for treats. He knows where to go! When he sees me find a spot where he peed on the floor...he looks immediately guilty and runs to his bed. He knows its wrong....I dont get it either!! Maybe someone out there has some answers!!!! |

| I have a 3yr. old that will always go tee tee on paper but will not poo poo on them. She also has a habit of getting up at 3:00am to go poo poo. Always in the hall. She wakes us up because she does all this scratching with her back legs when she goes. We have tried everything. She was even took out in the middle of the nite when we first got her for I don't know how long and still nothing works. My little one (Dudley) even goes and does his business on papers. Its been so cold we put papers down in the garage for them and change them out a dozen times a day. I have NEVER had problems with my 2 schnauzers. Tina (14yrs. old) has gone outside since she was about 8wks. old. Let me know if you find the solution. lol!!!! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My 3 girls started having accidents when I took in Nikki a male rescue. I thought I would have problems with him but he adjusted to the pads from day one and always uses them or goes outside when he's out. I got so tired of all the accidents, I started from scratch. They are pretty much in my bedroom with me and that's where the pee pads are. I started watching them like a hawk and when they would go on the pads I would make a big deal about it and go get them a few cheerios as a reward. Also, they seemed to like to have accidents, right in front of my bed. So I went to Menard's and bought these plastic runners and put them in front of my bed. They don't look great but it seemed to break them of their bad habit. Now when Cali or Roxie use the pads they come running over kicking their back feet until they get a treat. The other day I didn't get up right away and Roxie kicked her feet for 5 minutes until I got her treat. They have gotten 95% better.
