| Belly Band Problem, help! My (very smart and learns fast!!) 2 yr old Yorkie, whom I adopted at 1.5 yrs, was pretty well potty trained but did have the occasional pee in the house when we did not understand the signs yet that he wanted to go, and also if we left him to roam free if we were out for a few hours. We started to use the belly band if we went out, to be safe, and he never peed with it on. Last week after we got back I asked my husband to take the dog out for a pee. The dog had the (then dry) belly band on from when we left him, and I supposed my hubby would take it off before taking the dog out. WRONG!!! My hubby left the band ON, put the leash on and took the dog for a walk/pee. The poor dog peed in the band as I assume he thought that is what we wanted him to do and also he needed to pee bad after being kept in. I was MAD as I thought it was against all I had taught the dog, i.e. he did not pee with the BB on. Now my hubby led the dog out when he needed to pee and the poor dog then HAD to pee in the BB. As the dog learns fast I feared the BB band would not work because of this incident, and I did not use it for some time. Well tonight I tried putting the BB on while we were in the house to check. He peed in the BB after it had been on only for about 15 mins and the dog did not NEED to go as he had been out only 20 minutes before. What can I do to re-teach my dog that he should not pee with the band on??? It was an easy and safe way to keep him dry and now I only seem to have the crate method to achieve the same result??? Any ideas please?? Thanks. |

| Don't give up. I too have a rescue and dogs don't like to be "wet" so he will/should only pee in it if he really has to go. I've had Toby for a little over a year and we are just now at the point where if we are only going to be gone for an hour or so, no more belly band! I make sure he goes potty outside before we leave and treat him. Praise, praise, praise every time he goes potty outside and eventually you can only praise now and then. Toby has no idea if or when he will get a treat for going potty outside but don't give up. There are many others on here that know better than I but I think the advice I'm giving is pretty much on the mark.

| I hate to say this, but you will probably have to revert back to potty training 101. Because he has learned that this is what he is to do with the band on, you wll have to start taking him out more, taking and putting the band on. It should not take too, too long if he'd been potty trained prior. I would, however, do it now rather than let it continue. Hope this helps. Just my opinion, others may have other suggestions. Good luck.

| Thank you Dianne and Mom for your helpful replies. Perhaps the 101 deal is what I have to do. As a (re!) start I have started leaving him his crate or tying him to my waist with a long leash so I always know where he is when I am busy. I am sure dogs cannot enjoy being wet and perhaps the recent BB incident in the house was just a fluke. Hope so, but I will assume he needs a recap of potty training anyway. Certainly though, when my hub took him out with the BB on by mistake, the dog really needed to pee and had no option. I take him out for 3 long walks/day and out to pee at least every 2 hrs or so, and he sure gets plenty of exercise. The trouble is our 'open plan' home does not have a tiled area I can fence in, and even if I did he would jump over it. LOL! Thank you all for reading my post and for being so responsive and helpful. I have hope to go on now! |
