| Can they ever be fully housetrained? Hi all, I have a 12 week old Maltese/Yorkie male who is adorable and is doing ok with his potty training - not great, not bad, just ok. He's going outdoors only, and I'd say he has an accident every 2-3 days, but in general he makes it outside probably two thirds of the time. I knew before I got him that Yorkies were supposed to be difficult to train, but now I'm really wondering just how trained he's going to get! Does anyone out there have an adult Yorkie who is really fully trained? My last dog was, but she was quite a bit larger, and she was trained within a few weeks. I've had my puppy for 4 weeks now (I JUST found out that they shouldn't be taken away from their mothers before 12 weeks, but nothing I can do about that now) and I'm wondering if there's any end in sight to watching him like a hawk and taking him out every hour! Thanks, I appreciate any words of encouragement and success stories! This board has been a great resource for me since my little guy came home. |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Two years ago, I started a thread entitled, "Untrainable?" So I feel you. My impression is that most yorkies get to about 95%, depending on how dedicated the owners are on training. I think most larger dogs, once trained, will explode before they let themselves go in the house, whereas most yorkies seem to feel that if ya really gotta go... you go. A few people here say their yorkies are 100%. I'd say Thor is at 99%. I trust him completely inside my apartment. But if we go over to someone else's house and he smells a strange dog, he'd mark if I let him. I can live with his current level of potty expertise.

| Yes it is possible- but not at 12 weeks old- your baby cannot control himself well at this point- so even if he understands the concepts he may still have accidents if not watched carefully.

| My yorkie/maltese is 15 weeks and doing so so on the potty training. She does really good if I remember to watch her like a hawk and stay on a schedule. If I forget or our schedule is changed it messes everything up. I hope one day she'll let me know instead of me being the monitor. |

| Yes, I believe they can depending on the dog and the dedication of the owner. Copper just turned a year old. I would say he is about 95% housebroken. I was told that with small dogs it could take a year...that seems to be true in our case. Most of the accidents we have had in the last few months have been because I wasn't paying attention when he wanted to go out or because of the terrible rains we had recently. I hung a large plastic cat ball attached to a ribbon on the outside door handle. Copper rings it with his paw when he wants to go out. Of course there are times when he just wants to go out and play...but it works pretty well most of the time. Good luck with your training. Consistancy is the key. Don't give up!!!

| Thank you so much for your replies. Yes, I know that 12 weeks is still very young! I guess I just freaked out because I keep reading and hearing horror stories about how Yorkies are impossible to train and that I should expect a lifetime of cleaning up poop and pee in my house. It's pretty obvious when he needs to poop (he starts running from one end of the room to the other like he's possessed) but with the peeing he doesn't really give us any signs. Sometimes we'll have just taken him out half an hour ago and he'll casually squat and make a little puddle. He knows we like it when he pees outside (he's come to expect his little treat when he does it) but maybe that part will just take time. I believe in my little dude, and my husband and I are both persistent and dedicated, so if it takes a while that's ok. I feel better now. 95% .... I can live with that! |

| Hi and congrats on your new fur butt Remy is 100% trained and is 2.5 years old. We got him at six months of age and began potty training then. He goes outside and in the first year I was outside a lot, and watched him constantly. Keeping to a strict schedule was key to - as soon as he woke up we went out. Even if that meant 5am. He would eat and we would go out again. We were out every few hours, and he received lots of praise and constantly heard us tell him "potty outside" Now we take about 5 potty breaks every day. Your little one is very young compared to when we started with Remy. Be patient, keep to a strict schedule, and he will come around, it just takes time |

| Hi! My little girl is 100 percent house broken. However, she was eight months old before I could fully trust her in the house. She has been trained on the wee wee pads and never goes outside. We live in New York and it gets pretty cold here in the winters - so she has a corner in our washroom and has not had an accident in over 4 years. My little boy - on the other hand............... Is a year old and still goes in the house. He however, prefers to go outside - no matter how cold it is. So.............. every dog is different. Keep at it - it does take diligence and patience. Four months is approximately the time you can start being serious about housebreaking. Before that.............. probably is too early to get any serious results. Good luck!!!

| Yes, I do believe any dog can be 100% potty trained. It's generally the owners fault if they're not. In MOST cases, of course ruling out medical problems, and I do believe some dogs are just harder than others. For example, Jackson will have a poop accident about once every 3 months in our regular house, but he has never had an accident in any other homes (including my dads- and we spent the night at least once a week, he's 100% over there). Generally when he has a poop accident in our regular house, it was after he was barking at the door and me saying "yeah, right! You don't have to go - you just went!" And then he will go in the other room... lol. So I totally blame his accidents on none other than myself, and they happen pretty rarely anyways. So any accident he has is fully my fault. My dads 3yr old JRT mix is always pottying in the house. Always. Why? My dad and his wife never took the time to properly potty train her. They were never consistent, never diligent, and got lazy when the fenced in yard was built. So they just assumed she was going and she wasn't. She generally goes in the house at least once a day. If they took her out physically and WATCHED her go and praised her, she could definitely be 100% potty trained, but it's the owners lack of patience and consistence that causes her to be un-potty trained. Plus she's got free roam of the whole house and probably shouldn't. They just don't work hard enough on it. If you've got a difficult dog... you've gotta go back to potty training 101. Supervise 24/7 and if you can't -- in the crate/expen they go. You've gotta praise them when they do right, and teach them the correct way to do things. It's very unnatural for a dog to go in a specific place, if dogs lived on their own, they'd go wherever the heck they wanted. lol.

| Shadow is 8 months old. I would say she hasn't had any "accidents" in about a month. But I wouldn't trust her if she didn't have access to her pee pad. |

| My yorkie is almost three. He is fully potty trained, but I couldn't give you an age at when that happened. He knows how to tell me he needs to go outside. My dogs are not pee pad trained because 1. I don't want to buy pee pads and 2. They'd never hit it anyway.

| I've had two yorkies and was able to house train both to go outside 100% of the time. My second Yorkie is 10 months old now and I can't remember the last time we had an accident. We also live in upstate NY and trained outside despite the cold and snow. So yes... it can be done! Hang in there! |

| My first yorkie was a female and she was pretty easy to housebreak. We started off with her in her crate but I felt bad about closing her in a box so I gave her the laundry room...I covered much of the floor with pee pads and once a week I would put one less down. (she was like 4 months old at the time) It was winter so we didn't start moving to outdoors til spring. I took her out on a leash and would walk her around til she pottied then she could run around the house for awhile freely. If she didn't potty then I'd put her back in her room til our next trip outside. The next thing I knew she would go to the door and do a dance wanting out. My new pup is just beginning his 10th week so he is a hit and miss right now with pads and soon he will go to the laundry room for us to begin his training but for now I just hope for the best as I think he is much to young to do alot of potty training with. |
