Default Piddle-pad-trained male? Is it possible?

Does anyone have a male Yorkie that is trained to use a pad?

I've tried to train my male Yorkie to use a pad in the bathroom for almost one year--since he was 12 weeks old. He'll piddle on it first thing in the morning when he gets out of bed (my bed), but almost never on his own during the day. (He sleeps on my bed at night--so no accidents then.)

Has anyone tried a cage? He's 15 months old now.

I've tried almost every suggestion (treats + praise, mopping piddle with the pad, putting his pudding on the pad, different brands, etc.). Except I have not tried putting him in a cage with just a bed and the pad (I guess that would be about a 2 foot x 4 foot?). (Putting him in a cage seemed mean. But, if that works for little boy Yorkies, I'll try it.)

My Yorkie book said that they would be very hard to potty train--especially males--so I was expecting it to be hard. He's worth it!

Joey's trained to go on pads. We crated him at night and first thing in the morning and a couple of times during the night we'd place him on the pad. (He couldn't hold it all night when he was young.) During the day I kept him in a small confined area with a couple of pads, and it was hard for him to make a mistake. When he was out of his x-pen, he was closely supervised, and a pad was always within a few steps. It was easier to train on the wood floors rather than the carpet, but we had lots of pads, so that he'd never have to run too far to find one. I'm not sure what you mean by putting his pudding in his bed? I don't think human pudding is good for dogs, but no food should ever be placed on their pads, dogs don't like to pee and eat in the same place. There are several ways you could train him, but the idea is to never let him make a mistake, if he makes a mistake, you've made a mistake. Are you home most of the day, crate training is another option, and this usually gets the fastest results, but you have to be home to place them on a pad ever few hours. If you aren't home an x pen with food, toys, bed, and pads, will work also, but when he's out of the x-pen he needs to be carefully supervised. Praise him, every time he does it right, and ignore the mistakes, but clean them with an enzyme cleaner so he won't be compelled to return to the same spot, Natures Miracle is a good one, and it found at most pet stores. By the way, crate training isn't mean, dogs really like the crate, it's like a den to them, but it's only mean if you make them hold their urine too long.

Rizzo is totally trained on piddle pads Is your little boy neutered? Sometimes un-neutered males tend to go ahead and mark their homes no matter how much training time you put in. Of course so do some neutered ones
Since day one I've been confining him to my kitchen with piddle pads laid out for him. He prefers to pee "on something" so they worked out great for me. Now he gets free roam of two rooms while I'm out, I just make sure to lay down a pad in every room. He is just over a year old and I couldn't be more pleased with the progress we've made considering it's their one and only flaw
He still has accidents in my bf's house, he'll pee right next to a piddle pad so I'm trying to figure out what that is about. I'll probably go cleaning crazy all over that place while he is out of town and then start potty training him for the bf's house. I don't thin it's that uncommon for yorkies to need to be potty trained for every house they go to. They are stubborn little pups, lol
Good luck with your little guy, just know it is possible it just takes longer for some than others.

Pudding on the pad = poop?

Is your boy neutered? Does he have quick, easy access to the pad throughout the day? When a dog has to travel too far, they may be more tempted to potty where they shouldn't.

I disagree with your book that boys are harder to train. My boys are both pad trained and they were easy. I believe the key to our success was very close supervision and over-the-top praise. We still throw parties for each trip to the pad and Max is 2 and Teddy is 1.5 years old. Same when they potty outside.

As suggested above, if you cannot supervise at all times, I would restrict his freedom in your home to either an xpen or one small room until he is fully trained.

Default Yorkshire pudding

Thank you for the encouragement. So it is possible!

I should have explained that he was neutered at about 10 or 11 weeks (before I got him).

Also, I'm home all day.

Pudding is my euphemism for poop.

Lol, duh, I'm so dense. Seriously, Joey still doesn't poop all the time on the pads, but he does use a special room for that. His poop is firm, so it doesn't really bother me, but I have no clue on how to get them to poop on the pad, he really likes his privacy, and he makes sure we aren't around for that.

I got Nikki estimated to be 16+ years and he was outdoor trained. He took to the pads right away and is better than my girls at using them consistently so it can be done. I think it helped that I have females using the same pads.

My new puppy who is 12 weeks old named Reesie is on pads right now. I've only had him for a week and he goes pee on the pad 80% of the time and poops on 100%. I am transitioning him to outdoors (just started yesterday-and he is following older brothers suit) as I eventually want him outdoor trained b/c pottying inside grosses me out. He either pooped/peed outside or on the pad yesterday, amazing. So males on the pad CAN BE DONE Good luck!!!!

Our 16 week old male is almost completely pad trained. He will run into the room with pads and go on his own now. The first four weeks we had him we were taking him to the pads every couple of hours for him to go, and I think he is getting it. The only problems now are 1) He doesnt alway poop on the pad, but that is getting better, and 2) He isnt alway all the way on the pad (puts his front paws on and leaves his back end off the pad) so some gets on the floor. We are proud that he is getting it. Even when he makes the mistake of #2 above, at least he has the right idea.

We have an 11 year old yorkie that has separation issues. About 3 years ago we started using puppy pads for the peeing. He does wonderful with them. He rarely misses! It has been a real help for us. No more puddles to mop up when we return home.

Thor is fully pad trained. He tends to prefer privacy, but I reserve his biggest, nicest treat for poops in front of me, and that has broken some barriers. He's always thrilled when he's finished a poop.

One thing I discovered was that the pad can't be too close to the wall, or he lifts his leg. Some people tape the pad part way up the wall to deal with this.

My boy is now trained to piddle and poop on the pads. i started training him when he was 16 months old. He literally drops everything and will run to the bathroom. It's possible. Don't give up!

Yes, that. I learned it the hard way.

Hot Rod is very good at peeing on the pad. He would rather poop outside or on my front door rug. I've only ever seen him lift his leg once while on the pad, normally he squats but he for sure lifts and marks outside constantly. lol

We keep a pad inside their expen, in the sunroom when it's warm enough for them to be out there and then in hubby's garage-which they get taken out to several times throughout the night. He will poop on the pad in the garage more than in the house but only if his schedule get messed up, like it has been with all the snow we've had. Fortunately, he's pretty regular in that he goes first thing and at lunchtime when we go for a walk.

My 2 have been pad trained ever since we brought them home. I would definitely say you need to watch for any signs of them needing to go and make sure you praise and treat once they do. Use a phrase for when he is actually going so he will become familiar with it. This will get him to learn what it is that you want him to do on the pad.

I have read where others have wrapped pads around something like a 2 liter soda bottle and set it in the middle of the pad so the dog can lift his leg. I've never had to do this so I don't know if it works or not.

Good luck, it is possible!

My Ben will use pads if I am not here to let him outside. He prefers to go out but doesn't have a with pads. I do buy the larger sized pads because of him. It gives him more room to make sure he hits the pad. With the little pads, he would stand on them, but when he lifts his leg, it might not all be on the pad. I get the 24 X 36" pads from YT vendor: RDB911 -- they are great -- large size and extra absorbant! Plus they are a really good price too! Ryan also give a YT discount!
