| Crate/Potty Training Issues Hi, I'm new to Yorkie Talk. My fiance and I just got a 5 month old male Yorkie for Christmas. He was from a pet shop and was used to going in his cage if he had the urge to go. This has made potty training difficult. He's does pretty good during the day and we take him out several times. He's picked up on the fact that if he potties when we take him out he gets a treat. But his problem lies in overnight. Every morning when I go to get him out of his crate I find he has pooped. He has never peed in it. Always poop and always overnight. I've wondered if it's because of anxiety. He has slowly developed some major separation anxiety while in his crate. If I leave the living room to go to the bathroom, he starts yelping. Same with if he sees me getting my keys and coat in the morning. He doesn't mind if my fiance leaves the room, but is attached to me. He's also started yelping at night and waking me up to where I can't sleep. I've tried taking him to potty when he does that but he just wants to play. I'm exhausted and I have a health issue that requires me to get enough sleep or I get sick. Please help!!! I'm so exhausted and my fiance and I are now thinking we may have to rehome Bailey (our new yorkie boy). I'm sad and disappointed. |

| I feel your pain! My 2 year old Yorkie, Teddy, has major separation anxiety and barks continuously all day while he is in his crate and we are at work. And he does often times poop and pee in the crate. We leave him out at night now but when he was just a puppy like your Bailey he would whine all night and would go to the bathroom on the floor if we didn't take him out every three hours. The only suggestion I can give is to be patient and work with him, although your health issue does make it more difficult. Does your fiance help with taking him out during the night? I would also suggest getting him on a schedule with food and water. Teddy now knows that after 730 each night he no longer gets food or water. Be sure to take him out right before you go to bed if you aren't doing so already. It's a difficult process housebreaking a Yorkie...or at least it was for me! I hope everything works out for you! |

| Thanks for your reply! :) I appreciate your sympathy and understanding. My fiance has been trying to help during the day, but can't help at night because he works nights. We'll keep working with Bailey. I'm sure all will work out in the end. |

| What if you leave him overnight in a pen with a wee wee pad? At least this way maybe if he has to go he won't have to lie in it. Or maybe put the crate beside your bed so he can see you and maybe feel more secure and also you would hear him if he has to go out. My first dog would cry horribly in the crate overnight and poop in it as well. It was a nightmare having to bathe him every morning but as soon as I put the crate next to my bed where he could see me he stopped crying and pooping in there. Good luck!!!
