| Piddle pad training Ok so I just picked my puppy up this morning. He's 9 weeks old and I already love him to death. But that's neither here nor there lol...the breeder had him doing really well going potty on newspaper but I would like for him to be trained on piddle pads. When I brought him home I caught him 3 times in the act of peeing on my floor, yelled no and put him on the piddle pad with the "housetraining aid spray" (the spray that is supposed to encourage him to potty in a specific area). He just looked confused and walked right off when I said go potty. The third time something clicked in my brain and I put a piece of newspaper on top of the piddle pad and sprayed and told him to potty. He peed almost immediately. But am I going to have to keep putting paper on the piddle pad for him to go? How can I ween him from this? |

| Winston is almost 7 months and he uses the pads and goes outside. I used a crate that I was able to make smaller. I took him out every hr on the hr to the pad and said potty. When he did I made a big deal and gave him a treat. Let him play for awhile & put him back in the crate. Take him out of crate to eat and drink and over to the pad again. If he doesn't put him back in the crate and take him out again in about 15 min. They get what you want them to do pretty quick. Do not let him have the run of the house. Mine is allowed to played in the kitchen as I watch him, when I can not he is in the crate or the gate is up in the laundry room which is a rather small room with his pee pad to control accidents. Hope this helps, the big issue is you have to watch them, its not their fault if they have an accident it is ours, we were not watching. Yorkies take time..................... be patient. | Congratulations on the new addition to your family. Winston2010 gave great advice: limit your pup's freedom to one area, supervise, and praise profusely when he goes potty on the pad. Never stop praising, and giving small treats helps too. You should be able to skip the newspaper. When your little guy sees how happy you are that he went on the pad, it will click. I would advise against yelling when you catch him going in the wrong place. A quick no is sufficient and then do as you have been taking him to the pad and using keywords and phrases indicating that it is the correct place to potty. He won't have to pee again immediately, but the act is good reinforcement. |
