Default My dog goes number 1and 2 (in my house)even though I take him out

Hello everyone, I know there are many threads regarding potty training on here. However I am not sure if we are having a potty training issue or not. My boy is a 3 year old a non neutered male dog (who has studded puppies). I take him out as soon as I get home, and in the morning when I wake up, and when ever I need during the day. The dog will come into the house and poop 10 minutes later in a room where no one is. He also likes to pee on my toilet. It took me 2 days of steam cleaning under the toilet to get my bathroom not to smell of pee. I thought this worked and then he peed there just moments ago. I am not sure what to do, I am going crazy with this boy. He stays in a crate all day because I can not trust him not to go to the bathroom in the house. I feel badly doing this. Also I had a friend tell me when I see the mistake to bring the dog to it and put his face near it then punish him. He knows he is in trouble and he cowards away from the area when I set him next to it. So I know that he knows he has done wrong. Please please please help me

Do you keep him outside long enough that he pees and poops outside? Have you tried any of the cleaners that will take away the smell of where he has peed at?

if you do not catch him in the act, do not punish him later, he won't remember what it was that he did to make you angry.

You might want to try the washable pee pads for training specifically to use those areas. You could try an xpen with a potty pad and slowly increase the size....until he is just using the potty pad only.

Use white distilled vinegar to clean the spots...the vinegar smell will dissapate and cleans the pee up.

I don't recommend taking him to the area and putting his nose by or in it, a dog generally only has a 5 minute retention with their memory and if you scold him, he is more likely reacting from that, than the area he went to (knowing he is in trouble.)

When taking or letting him out to potty, how long are you doing it for? If after eating/drinking/playing (within 20 minutes) then only let him our for about 5-10 minutes and use the words that you want him to associate with "going" take some treats and praise him like nobodies business when he goes outside.

He might be associating the outside as "play" time only and not using it as a potty time break if you are doing it for too long.

Take him out for longer for the walks or play time. A couple of questions: How old is he? How long have you had him?

He is just over three years old and we met the day after he was born. I brought him home at eight weeks old. He seemed to do well at first using the pads, however I am trying to get him to go out doors so that I do not have a house smelling of dog pee. I have been scrubbing with vinegar water solution and steam cleaning. I would like him to tell me when he needs to go to the bathroom outdoors. How do we get to this point? When we go out, he lifts his leg, how ever I think it is just for show.

Isabel is 9. I take her and Mose out first thing in the morning. It takes Moses forever to find a place to do his business but Izzy goes pee right off. We can be out there 1 minute or 5 minutes and when I bring them in, she goes right to the pee pad area and takes her morning poop. I had taken up my throw rugs because to her they were big pee pads. I did that years ago and just in the last year started using them again. Yep, she stopped using the pee pads and started using the throw rugs. I haven't noticed anything on the carpet. So, up went the throw rugs and she's back to using the pee pads. It's a good thing this doesn't bother me because obviously she does what she wants where she wants to do it. But a throw rug can be washed, poop picks up easy and she's worth the bother.

If you get him neutered this may help curb the marking, as far as the poo-ing goes, you need to make sure you let him stay outside long enough to go number 2. I know Rizzo requires a poo 2x a day, in the morning when we wake up, that trip can be anywhere from 5 mins to 25, but he doesn't come in until he does both. In the evenings he goes once as well, again, this could take a while, but if he seems to be taking a while to go number 2 I'll just play fetch and chase with him and he'll stop, find a spot and do his business. Then he gets lots of praise and we go inside and play some more, which means back outside just in case he worked up a pee. You just have to know your dog, I know Rizz poos 2x (at least) but no more than 3x a day, and has to be let out at least every 3-4 hours to pee, if not I'm mopping and it's totally my fault. Of course I always leave a pad (we're just starting on the potty patch and its working really well) for him to use in case of emergencies which I know come up esp. with such a small bladder.
Make sure you are using an enzyme cleaner to get the pee smell out, just because you cant smell it doesn't mean he cant.

Default Thank you to everyone!!

I know this is an issue with me and not my baby boy. I will have to work on waking up earlier in the day to make sure he gets out to use the bathroom. I know that he needs to go number 2 in the early morning. He goes and jumps back into my bed. Thank you to everyone who has given me ideas and suggestions. I will work on this and hopefully curb our problems. As for the neutering, I believe it is his time. He has studded a few litters of puppies, but I think I am ready. My only concern is, are we too late? (He turned 3 in August)

Maybe, maybe not...all dogs are different but neutering can help decrease his chance of cancer later in life. If the neutering doesn't immediately help you can order belly-bands many breeders use them on their un-altered males during a females heat as they start to mark like crazy.
