| Potty training, crating and my lack of sleep Scarlett is 4 months old. She sleeps in her crate at night. She goes to sleep around 8 every night. She wakes up like clockwork at 12:50 to go potty. Then she wakes up again around 5 to potty again. I am so exhausted from not getting enough sleep and find myself going to bed earlier and earlier to try to keep up. How long do your pups sleep at night and how many times do they ask to go out? I know Scarlett is still young, but this lack of sleep is getting to me. Please tell me she will grow out of this. |

| Your title made me laugh as it reminded me of my first few weeks with my dog. A puppy can only hold it for their age in months plus 1 hour- so your 4 month old puppy really can only hold it for about 5 hours, which makes sense with what you are saying her schedule is. One thing I finally did out of desperation was let Piper sleep with me...for whatever reason is she able to sleep better and longer with she is in bed with me. I'd rather her not, but I needed sleep. Are you withholding water before she goes to bed? that may help a little as well. Otherwise until she gets older, she will still need to go out. Are you pee pad or outside training? Another option if pee pad training is to put her in an xpen and so she can use the pad. |

| You have given me hope that this will get better. No, I don't withold water. I am potty training her outside. I have thought of using the pee pads for getting through the night, but to me it seems like double training. One to the pee pads, then second time to go outside. I have thought about letting her sleep in my bed. Last pup I had I let do that and he never had a problem going through the night. Of course at that time my husband worked nights. He is retired now and I'm afraid he would squish Scarlett if she slept in our bed. |

| It will. Piper is now almost 6 months and while I am still getting up earlier than I would like to, it is now only once, instead of a few times. I also only train outside, so that is more difficult, but in the end it works better for me. I would try withholding water a little before bedtime, it may not help a whole lot because she is still so little, but it may. I have the same fear as you about bed sleeping, luckily (or unlucky??) I am a very light sleeper, so I feel if she moves or if I was to move on her. I won't let her sleep next to my BF because he is not a light sleeper and would roll on her if she did. Good luck! |

| When I first got Chloe, my husband was away for 2 weeks in the field(US Army). I let her sleep with me because there was alot of space in the bed. I truely believe that is how she was able to get through the night without having to potty. I had to wake up at around 6am to let her out because she would wander around the bed and I knew she had to go. The older she gets, the longer she is able to hold it. When my husband came home from the field we decided to crate her at night so that we wouldn't squish her while we are sleeping. We made sure to just let her have enough room in the crate to sleep, and that's all. We crated her until she was about 9 months and then let her sleep with us again because we felt as though she was big enough. She will sleep half the night with us and half the night on the floor. Lol.. Now, with Andy, it's a different story. When we got him we crated him at night immediately. He would whine and we would give him a firm "NO!" and he would stop. He had a few accidents in the crate during the first week we had him but he finally understood that the poop was disgusting to lay in and stopped(thank goodness, I was tired of cleaning him and the cage!!). haha... So he has always been in the crate at night. He is 5 lbs, smaller than my Chloe who is 8.5 lbs. So I knew that it would be more difficult training him. We had to let him out several times at night in those first few months. I still worry about him having accidents because he's smaller than her. When my husband was gone to Korean and then Iraq, I would let BOTH of my babies sleep in bed with me. For some reason it helps them sleep better and longer. During the summer when I wasn't working (I'm a sped assistant) they would let me sleep in until around 8:30. It just takes time...but they will get it before you know it!

| Aww, you poor thing...this too, shall pass. Actually, it sounds like your pup is on a good schedule since she's consistent and getting up only once a night at 4 months old. Maybe you could keep her up past 8 (a little later each night) until she's closer to your bedtime? Then you'll get closer to 5 hours in one stretch before she wakes up. But before you know it, as she get bigger and physcially capable of holding it, she'll be sleeping through the night. And withholding water for a couple of hours before she goes to bed it a good idea, but just be sure it's not too long, especially if she's tiny. Great job, keep it up!

Same here. When Cody was in a crate he was waking us up at 4 or 5 a.m. (wanting to play and go potty). At 6 months we started letting him sleep with us. Cody is now almost 9 months old and I keep him up with us till we go to bed and take him out before then. Now he sleeps all night. | |

| Sleepless nights Hi, Webster is 4 1/2 months old. He was sleeping in his crate from 930 pm - 630 am. I was thrilled. Then I decided to let him relax on my bed for a little while before lights out. Everything was good. He is always so happy in the mornings that I decided to start the day off with a few minutes together in my bed to start the day off right. Now he wakes up every 1-2 hours through the night. He doesn't have to go to the bathroom. He just wants to be with me. So to get some sleep I put him in bed with me. On the second night he chewed a hole in my new duvet cover. So, back to the kennel. Now we don't sleep again. He is chewing on everything. After reading these pages I am ready to assume that he just needs to sleep with me and that doesn't make me a bad Mom but what about that chewing? |
