| Potty training...using treats? I've been diligently working with Lulu on potty training since she came home 5 weeks ago (she's 19 weeks old now). I thought by now she'd show some progress. I bought Poochie bells to bell train her & we are working on that as well. My question is should I use treats to help reinforce the "potty outside"? Should I give her a small treat each time she potties outside? How can I get her to go to the door on her own when she needs to go out to potty? I've read the potty training tips, etc. I keep Lulu confined in a playpen if I can't watch her closely. She doesn't potty inside the house a lot, but she doesn't really go to the door by herself either. I always just take her out to prevent an accident. I'm trying to set her up for success by not allowing the chance for accidents.

| That you are trying to set her up for success is probably the most important step in my opinion. When you take her out to potty use your potty command (mine is simply "go potty") When she does, BE READY the SECOND she is done get that treat in her mouth and give her a praise party like none other! GOOD POTTY over and over and over and love, love, love on her for it. We use Zuke's mini naturals treats and those are working great for Stormy. She'll pee a drop just to get one.

| I definitely give lot of praise when she potties, I'm just thinking reinforcing it with a treat will help. I'm gonna give it a try for a few days.

| Definitely she should be given a treat when she potties! I think you'll see that this really helps. It should be a treat that she really loves and I use only those "high value" treats for potty right now. That makes them an even bigger deal to her.

| I give treats also. With my first yorkie, I used to give her the miniature gold fishes. My kids loved them, they were in the house, so I thought it was a good treat to give the puppy. Not sure how nutritionally sound that idea was, but it worked. She was fully trained by 8 months. Realistically, you can't expect any major improvements from a puppy - and really - you can't start training until they are about 4 months old. I read somewhere though that treats are not really recommended because the puppy will go just for the treat - and not really finish - just so they could get the treat. And then when they get back inside realize they hadn't really finished - and then finish inside. My little boy who is 7 months old seems to be just a little bit more difficult to housebreak. I give him the Bil Jac Little Jacs. Don't think that they are very nutritional either. Someone on YT pointed out that it contains a lot of by products. I think its also giving them bad breath. I will try and get the Zuke's next time I'm at the pet store - or maybe go back to the fishes - LOL! Good luck! |
