| Help! Has anyone successfully pad trained an older yorkie? I got Bailey when he was a puppy and trained him to use a pad, which he does. Jesse I recently brought home is 2 years old and not pad trained, I've been using a folded diaper until I receive my Belly Bands. I want to pad train him, I just don't know how to go about doing it! Can it be done? Has anyone pad tained an older dog? Any tips or advice? Thanks, I don't know where to start!

| You might start by taking the pads outside with you when he goes outside, then either stick it under him when he goes or wipe some of his urine on the pad, then bring it back inside. You could do a reverse training of sorts, like some do when transitioning from pads to outside. Slowly moving the pad closer to inside. I would start over as if he is a baby and praise praise praise whenever he pees on the pad, outside or inside. Or, in the beginning, even if he only sniffs the pad... praise and treat and repeat. Using a command, such as "go potty" and taking him to the pad after eating, drinking, playing, etc. You should be familiar with about how long before he has to go again, and take him to the pad and put him on it and give the command It probably isn't going to happen overnight, but if you keep with it, persistent and patient, he will learn Are you letting him go outside when he has to go right now? Does he give you a signal, go to the door, etc? If so, you can use that as a cue for his training

| No MaryKay, I am in an apt building, it's okay when I at my bf's house, I can just put him out in the back yard, but not convenient at all in a building. I think that is my major problem

| Excellent question. I would love to pad train Baxter. He is 2-3 yrs old. He is wonderful about going outside. Never an accident. But for selfish reasons I would like to pad train him so that I could leave him alone as long as I need to, along with the girls. DH goes to the clubhouse for days at a time and he takes Bear. I would prefer he didn't have to take Baxter, but I work 12hr shifts and Baxter cannot be expected to hold it for 12hrs. The girls do fine, they have each other to play with, and the cats. They have a huge party while I'm gone and are very happy when I return. But, it would be nice if Baxter could also stay and not have to go to the clubhouse. It'll only work if I can pad train him. So, I'm anxious to see if there are any solutions.

| No, He was neutered at an early age. Would that make a difference? He doesn't lift his leg to mark, he just goes pee inside and I have been belly banding him, until I can figure out what to do Quote:

| yeah..the girls always use their 'corner' and once in awhile they will want me to watch say 'good girl' and give them a cheerio. I've tried pointing at a pad and saying 'good boy' to Baxter and he just looks at me like I've lost my mind.

I don't think it will be hard to get him going on the pads. when you find a mistake I'd wipe it with the pad, so he smells himself on the pad. Plus he will soon follow your other boy too i bet. | |
