New to YT, New Puppy... Need some advice!! :) Hi Everyone - I first wanted to introduce myself to the boards. I have an adorable 12 week old male biewer yorkie, who I named Debit (yes, I'm an accountant). He joined my family 3 weeks ago. I grew up with animals my whole life (a toy fox terrier, then a boxer). However, he is the first of my very own!! My husband and I have decided that we want to eventually train him to go outside. However, currently, due to his age, the fact we live in Manhattan, and he only has his first shot of three for vaccinations we have been having him use papers/wee wee pads in our apartment. This was working out great.... until last night. We feed him three times a day per instruction from our vet and I make sure after he eats he goes in his pen to do his business, where his papers are. After, I then take him out for free time/play time. However last night and again this morning, even though he went to the bathroom on his papers, he still came out and marked on my carpet. I have bought the book, how to train your dog in 7 days, however it says that I really can't begin crate/potty training until 16 weeks old. So in the meantime, I have been just cleaning up after him since I don't want to reward him for using the pads since he will eventually go outside. So..... am I being too tough on him? Is this normal behavior? Do I have to wait until 16 weeks to begin formal training? Is it even possible that this behavior is marking at such a young age? I just don't want him using my entire apartment as his own personal potty for the next 4 weeks..... He's a smart puppy. He already knows the sit and down command very well (he will do it even without a treat). But does display some dominant behavior like humping and intense biting. The humping has decreased some with the training and I'm working on the biting (we have good and bad days with that one).

| Hi and welcome. When I got Duke, I was living in Chelsea and besides from him not being up to date on his shots at that young age, I didn't want him out on the dirty streets until he was a bit older. Fortunately, I had an area in my apartment that was gated off just for him. I had several pads out initially in one corner, his food/water in another and his bed/toys in another. He had accidents the first few weeks but I was patient with him until he began to associate the pad with either going #1 or #2. Eventually I went down to just one pad and he did fine. It will definitely take time, it won't be an overnight thing. The biting will be for a bit also as he is teething, Duke used to chase me around and those baby teeth hurt when they do get to you. He also used his teeth and tore up pads too. For the time being, try to watch him carefully when he is out on the carpet and stop him right away if you see him beginning to pick up his leg to pee. Good luck because it will take time and patience on your part but it is worth while. Also, this forum is extremely helpful when you have questions or just want to vent. Tam and Duke

Hello and welcome, I have a 12 week furbabe named Couture and she does the same thing. I would say picking her up as soon as she squats and placing her on her pad does work. When she starts to mark I would say bad potty then place her on her pad and I would reply with good potty. It will take sometime to train but if it gets anymore difficult I would invest in some Little Jacs/ Bill Jac treats. There made of chicken liver heres a link tp://www.petco.com/product/104712/Bil-Jac-Little-Jacs-Liver-Treats.aspx?cm_mmc=CSEMGooglebase-_-Dog-_-Bil-Jac-_-1137867&mr:trackingCode=BE731416-8381-DE11-B7F3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA Now for the biting I've done this with my bichpoo and now my yorkie, this really works! When Debit was with his litter mates they would roll around and bite each other but buy the time you recieved him he did not devolpe the skill not to bite because it hurts. So what I've done is so simple. Speak dog, when dogs are hurt or sad what do they do? they wimper with a sharp cry. That could wake you up in the middle of the night. So the next time he he wants to theeth on you or your furniture just do a lite wimper. I know it sounds silly but I've only had Couture for two weeks and Im seeing results. After I wimper she walks to me and licks me and I reply with good girl, I would then give her a cow hoof since this is what she's allowed to chew on. Cold Spot Feeds, Inc. Here is a place that sells them for cheap. Now its important that you let him come to you and let him get your hand in his mouth and let him bite a little, and then you can try this trick I say this because you want him to get use to having your fingers in his mouth for brushing teeth purpose. I hope all this helps!

It shouldn't be confusing at all. I would say to get. Him use to the outside environment as much as you can before it get cold. If he doesn't make business outside then I would try to put a pad down on the grass if he doesn't get the idea on his own. Since you live in NY and the winters are cold, I would still use pads in the cold months so keep that in mind too.

Hi there fellow New Yorker and Welcome. Because the winters are so bad here, I chose to only peepad train ours. When I do walk them outside, they somehow know its okay and they go outside - but in general they are only pee pad trained. Why not train for both? It sure helps when you want to sleep in or if you are gone for longer periods of time than expected.
