| Stay in Crate For 8 Hours?? Worried! I have a problem. I haven't seen my parents in 10 months since they live far away. They are looking forward to our visit, BUT they said Buddy must be stay in his crate. Well, Buddy is very spoiled and we never put him in there so he has only been in there for very short periods. He has full run of the house and loves being the king here. We have never had to leave him in a kennel. Do you think I should get some kind of sedative from the vet for when he is in the kennel and we are away from their home? I couldn't sleep last night worrying about this. |

| I cannot imaging leaving Bailey or Jesse in a crate for 8 hrs, do your parents have a larger room you could confine him to? He is not use to a crate, so will probably be very unhappy with it I hope you get some more suggestions!

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | I wouldnt want to leave any dog in a crate alone for 8 hours.. I dont think its fair, espeically if he isn't used to staying in there for long periods of time. How old is Buddy? Is there nobody who can look after him at home? Or do you have a play pen? anything would be better then leaving him in a crate all day.

| Is there anyone Buddy can stay with while you visit your parents? Its so not fair to lock him up for 8 hrs. is it because no one will be home? Is there another option like blocking off the kitchen or laundry room?? or maybe an ex pen??? Also have you thought about a comfortable carrier to just hold him while you are there with him?? I got this one for my girls and it is so comfortable on my neck and back because the way it is designed!! it has a soft minky lining.Screen shot 2010-08-16 at 8.29.20 AM.png There is even a soft mesh one that is only 3 oz and fold right up to put in your purse. They do run 40-70 dollars I sure hope you are able to work something else out. Good luck Last edited by FL Tink; 08-16-2010 at 04:35 AM. |

| Perhaps they will allow an expen rather than a crate. You can find some really nice protable ones that fold up for easy travelling. At least he could move around more in an expen.

| How about a soft sided playpen? They are very light and fold up flat for traveling. I use one when I visit my grandchildren to keep Lady safe. Blue Pet Tent Exercise Pen Playpen Dog Cat Soft Crate - eBay (item 280520377032 end time Sep-10-10 13:02:57 PDT) |

| When I visit my grandparents, Harley has to stay crated a lot, cause he doens't understand that he's only allowed in the kitchen (no room for gates and pens, she's a bit of a horder). I let him out on the kitchen floor on a leash, and then I bring him outside a lot too. It helps with the crate time a lot if gates or expens aren't an option.

| Stay in Crate I do not believe in crates at all, so I would not put him in one for eight hours, that is for sure. How about a pet-sitter? Good luck |

| How about a house/pet sitter that you trust? Thats what we do when we go on vacation. I left Spicy at a kennel (at the vet's office) once and just hated the thought of him being crated all day and night. I think they are much happier if they are home with someone they know.

| Staying in a crate too long Thanks so much for the suggestions. I am going to look into getting one of those soft-sided ex-pens and put his wee wee pads on one side, and his food and water on the other side. He will be 6 on August 29th. Right now he is behind me on the stairs laying on his side watching me as I type this note. I have to say, I just love spoiling him. I definitely want to take him with me as I don't have any neighbors I would trust enough to leave him with. |

| ex-pens question By the way, do those ex-pens have something on the bottom to protect the carpet, or do you put a tarp down or sheet or something? Thanks |

Maybe you could just take him everywhere you go, and if your mom questions that, just tell her he's never been crated and you would never do that anyway. Maybe she will help a little more.

| My parents would never dare to suggest how I should take care of my child furry or otherwise. 8 hours is a long time if the pup is not used to it and they should be more understanding. What about staying in a hotel so he has play time. JL

| what is their reasoning for wanting him to be crated? Are they scared of potty accidents, chewing something? I recently went to my inlaws and brought Allie for the first time. She is peepad trained but will go outside.I kept her with me on a leash and took her out often, no acidents in the house. It was really exausting trying to anticipae her needs, kinda like having a newborn away for home. At home they can do anything and go anywhere. In my opinion the visit wasn't really worth it. Next time I'll have my mom watch her. She would be more happy and relaxed at home and so would I. |
