Bartleby scratches /digs on my face to be let out in the morning. So, Bartleby will be one next month, and he is a well adjusted and darling dog. My biggest complaint is when he has to go potty. He uses his stairs to get into my bed, where he doesn't sleep, and scratches and/or digs on my face or head to wake me up. I've resorted to hiding under the covers in the morning so my husband can be harassed. But, he just won't stop. Water bottles don't work; he just looks at me as he is sprayed. I try to be firm with my "no" which usually works every other time. He also has issues with not listening to a "no" when he is jumping up and scratching on my leg. Does anyone else have a dog who uses this method to awake them? Any suggestions on how to get him to stop? Thanks

My babies sleep in a kennel, so they don't use it to wake me up. They do scratch my legs to get my attention. Sometimes they want up in my lap, want to go outside, or just play ball. It's difficult during summer because we don't wear long pants, but I don't mind. I feel it's better than barking, but that's just me. The face would be another story though. That's gotta hurt!

I agree with Baby Yorkie that I prefer scratching to barking. While a face scratch isn't pleasant, I would be pleased if my dog was waking me to go to the bathroom instead of doing it in the house. Maximo grunts politely in my ear to wake me up. Not sure how to train a dog to do that instead of scratching. How about training him to use a doggy doorbell? You could keep it in your bedroom and train him to ring it. The bell comes with instructions for training. Some people use simple jinglebells or windchimes strung to a doorknob. For general jumping and scratching, train your dog to "sit" or "down." Then if he jumps up on you, give him the sit or down command. I would ditch the water bottle spraying. He may think it is a game in these instances, or he simply isn't perceiving the spray as meaning "stop what you are doing." Last edited by Maximo; 08-05-2010 at 05:46 PM.

| I actually think that's impressive communication when they learn to do that. My older Yorkie, Vinnie, will scratch me too when he has to go out. He starts with a light scratch and, if I don't respond, slowly increases the strength of his scratching. He's a very effective communicator. He doesn't do it in malice, but really as a way to get me up to get him outside. He usually only does it when he really has to go bad.

I have always thought it was extremely bright on his behalf, scratching and all to wake me. But, oh so annoying, especially when I have to cover scratch marks on my forehead. Lol Also, he knows the command sit but only if I look like I have a treat to reward him. He's the same way with coming in from the backyard; if I'm empty handed, he runs back outside. Pain in my tush...

Using a doorbell is a good idea; I'll look into that. :-)
