| Backsliding Dinky was doing great, then I took down the barriers. He can't go everywhere in the house, but he can run around the living room, dining room, my bedroom. He does not poo or pee on my floors or carpet, but he does on his bedding and in his crate. It seems as if he does so every chance he gets. We walk him and take him out constantly and he goes potty outside fewer times every day. So I guess we need to restrict him back to the kitchen and restrict the blankets too. He LOVES being swaddled in a blanket, but then he seems to want to pee on any blanket that is his. I'm pretty tired of doing laundry. I add vinegar to the wash, but maybe that is not enough. Any good suggestions? |

How old is he? I kept a pee pad on a bench at the foot of the bed and Joey used that. If he's peeing in the crate, the crate is too big, or you don't take him out often enough. If he's not going on the carpet or floors he's doing great, and he maybe be going on your sheets because he smells a certain scent. This website has lots of great tips. | Yes, the crate is too big. We do take him out very frequently. He will goof around outside and then go in his crate about 10 minutes after he comes back in. IThe crate came with a divider that we took out,but we will put back in. We put the barriers in the kitchen back today, and wow, he was freaked out. He hid under a chair most of the morning. Also, he did go potty ousided 3 times today! SO hopefully, we are back on the right track. I am going to use the Nature's Miracle also. He really is confused! Right now he's ehausted and napping in his crate. Thanks for the advice. |

| Dinky will be 6 months old on the 12th of this month. We have only had him since the end of June. He had been pad trained, but he was confused and peed on of his bedding. So we switched him to outside training, and he did very well. He had been trained almost perfectly for daytime, but still pooing and peeing in the crate every night. I haven't worried about that too much because he is so little. The backsliding started right with his new access to most of the house. He was doing so well that I figured we could move on to "the next level." He loved running around the house like the terrier that he is. It seemed as if he prefered going inside and was getting the opinion that inside was his potty spot too. He kept ithnside the crate, but then last night peed on his blanket when we were on the sofa. Right now he's sleeping between me and hubby on the sofa. We carried him there, and he'll go back into the kitchen after a trip outside when he wakes up. He's such an emotional little guy. I haven't had a puppy since I was a kid. Our other dogs were both adult strays that took up with us when we lived in the country. They lived outside. Obviously, that won't work for my sensitive little Yorkie! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yeah, I don't know why he's going in his crate, making it smaller is a good idea. I know many have a set back around 6 months due to teething and neutering, but they are back on track in a couple of weeks. People often say that the first thing you should check for is the physical, and if since he seems to know he's suppose to go outside, it concerns me that he's going on his blankets, unless he just thinks they are a pee pad. If that keeps up after using Nature's Miracle on the blankets, you might want to check him for a bladder infection, although it's unusual in males.

| DO they start to think that one place is acceptable and another is not if you never catch them there? Rosie has been not bad on the main floor and will run to the door when she needs to pee, if we miss her cue she will pee on the floor! but today she peed on the scale in the bathroom and didn't even ask to go out! |

| I really don't think that there is a physical problem, but I'll keep my eye on him. He did all his pooing outside yesterday, and then this morning he woke me at 5 am to go out and did his poo outside! He still looks unhappy since we put the barriers back, but I think he is getting the idea. He usually goes out at 10 am or so. I took him out twice...nothing, then pooed in his crate when I was in the shower. I think he's just going to be a "work in progress" for longer than I thought. |

| Dinky has 2 or 3 poos a day. One very early about 5 am. This happens even if he had dinner at 5 or so the night before. He has another at around 10 am, and then his afternoon one around 6 or 7 during our walk. We walk 2 miles almost every single day of the year. We use umbrellas if necessary. Dinky does about half the walk, maybe less. The pooing in crate started once we put any bedding into the crate. We think the problem started because he thinks anything like that is a pee pad. The poo mistake happens more frequently than the pee mistake. I agree that we need to scour that crate. He does seem to try to do it in the back. We've put the divider back up in the crate just now, so hopefully all of this will have an effect. I have thought that he feels safer going in his crate. he's so distracted outside; we have deer, foxes, all kinds of critters out there. So of course, he's always supervised. I wonder if he just likes to go in private. Regardless, he's got to learn outside only, and I feel confident that he will get it. I went to the link you provided. Thanks, it was full of great info. |

| Thanks. I'm am trying to get him as solidly trained as possible before the school year starts. My husband is retired and will be with him them, but I promised to be the one to train him. We both can see that this little dog is pretty sensitive and is trying to please us, but he is young and can only do so much. I knew Yorkies were cute and had heard that they were a challenge to train, but I really didn't know he would be such a sweetheart. |
