| A puppy question!! 1. Tucker is only 13wks so I am not expecting him to be trained, but at what age will he start letting me know that he has to go potty. He gets a little fragment of a treat everytime he goes potty outside.(we do not use puppy pads) When outside, he will potty and then run to me for a treat..This is great, but even though we go outside every 30 minutes, he still sometimes has accidents but has no way of communicating to me that he has to go. For example, this morning we went out at 6am and he peed and pooped, then ran to me for a treat. Then he ran back up to the door and sat there waiting for me to open it. We went in to eat, and he did not eat his breakfast. 30 min later he popped on the floor without any regret.. ha! When should he start learning to try and tell me that he has to go out? 2. He has one red sweater that is longer than others. When I put that sweater on him he seems to get depressed. I put it on yesterday morning and all day yesterday I thought about taking him to the vet because he was not acting normal. Just slept all day and would not eat or drink. Then we go to my moms house to visit and I took the sweater off and next thing you know he's back to his old self.. He played for 2 hours getting into EVERYTHING and so when we got ready to eat, I put his sweater backon and set him down and he layed down right where I set him and did not move until I picked him up to leave. He acts like it a straight jacket... Is this normal? |

| I think Samson was around 3 or 4 months old when he started to bark if he had to go out. He would bark when he wanted to play also but I knew if he was barking and didn't chase after his toys when I threw them that he needed to go outside. He still had accidents because I don't know if he knew ahead of time every time he needed to go. With the sweater thing the only thing I can say is that Samson didn't care for the leg straps that some sweaters have. He would just walk around outside and not pee or anything, probably because they felt weird. When I took them off he went pee right away and started to run around like his usual self. |

| Dollar is only 3 months old too but he doesnt let me know when he has to go either. I have no idea...I try and take him out as muh as possible, but somehow he always manages to go on the floor too. What i am doing is taking him out a lot and showing him the potty pad out side. that way if he does go inside he will go on the potty pad.

| I remember the NO SIGN,, well, I would take him out ALL the time, usually about every commercial,, I was always saying " Give ME a SIGN!" I'm thinking he was about 4-5 months old before I figured out his sign,, which he still does, If Im watching tv, he will go over and sit beside it and stare at me,, and I know ITS TIME! I Was SOO happy , that we had a system. Bailey also has a Raincoat, that he act the same way, when I put it on him.. He doesnt dig it at all.

| both my yorkies were trained by 5 months old. i also have an older mix breed dog that probrably helped me with this.i have to ask do you carry him outside or do you let him walk outside? see i always had mine walk they started to also give me a sign by jumping on the back door.but if your not watching them and they have been giving the sign then they have no choice but to soil the floor.i live in florida so i have the benefit of being able to be outside alot so i constantly showed them outside was for play and soiling and inside is not. took alot of work and consistancy. you have to watch like a hawk and be stern with where they are allowed to soil. they are of coarse so cute and hard to be stern with but you will be happy in the long run. and a rule of thumb always take them out after eating, drinking, playing, sleeping, and grooming. ive also noticed that males take a little longer to train then females thats with any breed. good luck Last edited by flyorkies; 10-27-2005 at 06:30 AM. |

| Well right now he is baby gated in the kitchen. Sometimes he ill sit by the baby gate but not all the time. If I let him down to walk outside himself, then he will potty on my floor, so what I do is carry him to the back door saying lets potty outside the whole way and then once we step onto the screened porch, I will let him down and then he goes outside on the grass by himself.. I do always let him walk back in by himself and then he will walk to the kitchen and wait for me to lift him over the gate.. I have slowly been giving him more rooms of the house, but not the ones with carpet yet. He does however get a last playtime of the night with my husband and I in our bed and then he goes to his crate for the night about 9:00..I ordered some belly bands so hopefully that will help me let him have more freedom. As of now, I am just spending most of my time in the kitchen. Also, how much sleep should he be getting a day? |

| I'm not sure when he'll be ready to signal you he has to go potty but I hope he figures it out for your sake and sanity! lol As far as the sweater goes.. lol totally normal.. Harley just lays down and stares up @ me like I'm the worst mommy in the whole wide world. Some clothes bother him more than others. I just bought him some pj's that attach behind his back legs and it took him a while to get used to them. I wouldn't worry!

The trick on your part is to always let them out when they start ringing it even though you may know that they just want out and don't need to pee. Before too long, they get the connection that ringing the bell is what they need to do when they need to pee. 2. I don't know if that's normal or not, but what a cool tool for you! I would save that red sweater for times that I wanted to calm him down and then put it on! I'm jealous! | |
